Today I’m 33.

I was born on 9/11, and when you add up my full birthdate, you get 33. My Life Path number is also 33.

In numerology, 33 is considered a master number. The teacher, the artist, the healer. The one who learns through living and makes something of what they’ve learned.

9 carries the energy of completion. 11, intuition and awakening. And 3, the number surrounding this year of my life, represents expression, creativity, voice, joy, and being seen.

This birthday feels like an arrival.

Not into a new version of myself, but more deeply into the woman I have spent years becoming.

To write, to teach, to create. To make beauty from what once hurt. To trust my voice, to let myself be seen. To remember that healing does not require me to turn every wound into a lesson. To allow a meaningful life to also be a pleasurable one.

I have spent so much of my life surviving, rebuilding, beginning again. At 33, I want to simply inhabit.

Less proving that I made it through, more allowing myself to be here.

Detroit, I would love to gather with you.

On September 23, we’ll celebrate Towards What Hurt at the Detroit Public Library.

I knew I didn’t want the public launch of this book to simply be a reading. Towards What Hurt was made through the body. Through grief, illness, memory, survival, devotion, and the slow work of returning to myself, I needed the gathering to honor that, too.

We’ll share poetry, conversation, reflection, and space to be present with what these words might open in us. I’ll be joined in conversation by Michaela Ayers, and together we’ll explore the stories, questions, and lived experiences that shaped this collection.

There is something especially meaningful about celebrating this book in Detroit, the city that made me, surrounded by community.

If you’ve been following this journey, reading my work, holding me through this year, or simply feel called to be in the room, I hope you’ll come.

There will always be hardship. I do not want a soft life. I want liberation. Now. I want long life and love.

Here’s your sign to go ahead and make an Ancestor proud.

Towards What Hurt is officially in the world.

This year started with major open abdominal surgery. More of my small intestine and part of my colon, gone. I didn’t know what would come of me, but I surrendered entirely.

I still remember those first few days I felt decent enough to start going through my apartment, finding old poems. Some I wrote not long after my first surgery in 2013. I’d stay up late, IV still running, still getting my nutrition from a bag, and I’d edit.

In all honesty, getting lost in my work made me forget the pain.

Devotion entered my rooms, and I committed myself to completion. It became my everything, and recovery turned into a ceremony.

Years of lived experience brought me here. Poetry has given me an outlet to express my deepest wounds, my strengths, my beliefs.

I’m immensely proud of this body of work, and I believe it should live in many places, at many times, with many people who feel this language in their body.

Towards What Hurt is here. You can bring it home today. 🤎

Available now. Link in bio.

Even when I was scared to leave, I left anyways. When I was scared to speak, I spoke anyways. When I was scared to die, I lived anyways.

When God offered something better, I closed my eyes and opened my hands. I squeeze the compass of my own desires.

Do not be afraid, there is wisdom in uncertainty and life on the other side of your familiar suffering.

From Towards What Hurt, now shipping.
