On the Optimism Walk for the American Parkinson’s disease Association-Massachusetts Chapter.

This is a national PD organization, with chapters in every state. These are the folks that directly help Parkinson’s patients and their families. They provide local referrals, connect patients and loved ones with each other, communicate education, support groups, exercise classes, conferences, and access to experts. They are deserving of donations. This was their 24th annual walk. I must have started at the 2nd or 3rd walk, and have been there most years, each year, sadly with fewer and fewer of my PD buddies there.

For WPC 2026 attendees interested in Parkinson’s rehab, home-based neuro PT, and private practice models, I’d like to introduce Dr. Katie Wadland, DPT.

Katie is my daughter, and the owner of Healthy Aging Physical Therapy, a large in-home practice serving primarily people with Parkinson’s, complex neurological conditions, and osteoporosis.

What is unique about her practice is that she has worked on a solution to a common problem: people improve while they are getting physical therapy, but lose ground when they are no longer in therapy.

Katie also knows Parkinson’s from more than one side. I was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s during her first year of her doctoral program. So she knows PD as a clinician, and as the daughter/caregiver of someone who has been living with Parkinson’s for nearly a quarter of a century.

Her patients receive care in their homes, covered by insurance just as if they went to a clinic, from a therapist who sees the bigger picture and understands Parkinson’s in a way that cannot be taught in school.
