Greens 'n' Things Urban Farm

Greens 'n' Things Urban Farm Converting empty lots to valuable garden space in St. Petersburg, FL with a focus on lettuces, baby greens and root veggies for local families and restaurants.

I’ve been interested in growing my own food for a while now, thinking it’d be neat to be self-sustainable and operate a small farm for a living. Unfortunately, the realities of a farmer are not the same as the utopian vision I had. Land is expensive, equipment and maintenance are expensive, and the economies of scale do not operate by the same rules for farmers as other manufacturers. And so it’s

over before you even start. These are huge burdens to overcome for a new farmer, and are the reasons the average age of a U.S. farmer is now 58 years and continues to rise. There are many different approaches to farming, but nothing I’d come across fit my context of urban living in the most densely populated county in Florida. If you look hard enough though, you can find just about anything. Let’s eliminate the barriers to entry... I’m already paying for the land I’m living on and spending time to maintain it, and the front yard is brown, dusty and bare and sees no use other than a buffer between the house and the street. I cannot fit a tractor in this space, let alone any specialized planting or harvesting equipment, or processing facilities found on a typical farm; therefore, equipment and maintenance costs are reduced exponentially. Highly intensive and organic farming practices are used extensively in other parts of the world and have a long history of growing lots of food in small spaces. These techniques allow a greater diversity of crop and a higher rotation of production that cannot be matched by large scale farms. That’s how we got here; six, 25’ raised beds in the front yard giving us 375 square feet (almost a full 1/100th of an acre!) of bona fide farm land in the center of the most populous city in the most densely populated county in Florida, St. Petersburg. Sunshine City! This Spring at Greens ‘n’ Things Urban Farm, we’ll see what we can grow, trying different varieties of lettuces, salad and braising greens, spinach, chard and baby roots like radishes, beets, turnips and carrots, even some squash, zucchini and peppers. No lights, no pumps, no reservoirs, no tractors. Just sun, dirt and water.

Accepting CSA Memberships Now

Happy July Farm Friends!

Just as last season was winding down, our work was not over! For weeks now, we've been harvesting and clearing out the last of the survivors and filling the rows with summer crops to start us off for the Fall. I am happy to finally be running out of space!! Its cooking out there, but the Sweet Potatoes, Okra, Eggplant, Peppers, Ginger, Turmeric and Roselle Hibiscus don't mind, and I'm hoping they will get us an early start for Season 10!

CSA in an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture, and the way this model works is we sell memberships now, during the off-season when we don't have the same revenue coming in as during the harvest season. This investment in our farm allows us to make necessary upgrades to equipment and infrastructure, and in return, we feed those Members the best of what's available from the Farm for 30 weeks between October and May.

I am taking reservations for next Season's CSA right now.
The Season is expected to run October 16 - May 7, giving you 30 weeks of veggies. $550 for Bi-weekly (Most Popular), $1100 for a weekly share.
You can reserve a spot through our online shop here (https://www.greensnthingsurbanfarm.com/s/shop) .

We're still open!

Summer time is for the fruits!
Don't forget, all summer long I am hunting for and harvesting tropical fruits!
We're a few weeks into Mango Season now, and we should have another couple months of harvests. We've had Passionfruit, Dragonfruit, Lychee, Bananas and Wax Apple so far. Each week is a different spread, with new varieties available throughout the summer. We can probably count on Avocado showing up by the end of the month.

**IF YOU HAVE MATURE FRUIT TREES, I am always looking for local fruit for the Farmstand. I will pay fair prices for quality fruit. We have tons of fruit production right here in Pinellas County, and I'd like to keep making more of it available to our community! Send me an email at [email protected]

Nursery and Farmstand Open in Summer
Veggie Season is done, but we've still got tons of Fruit Trees for sale and Veggie, Herb and Flower starts for your own Yardens.

Fridays have been going well, so I will keep Friday hours for now!

Whats Growing On?

I'm beginning to catch my breath as we wrap up our 9th Season (!!!) of growing veggies in the middle of St Pete, and I wanted to update all you wonderful people who support our Urban Farm!

We've wrapped up our 9th CSA Season, and this year we fed the most people on the least land we've ever had. Our Urban Farm lost access to one of our three farmlettes after the hurricanes last year, and now we grow everything we've got on just 8,000 square feet. This year we fed 24 families for 30 weeks on our tiny farm!! Not only did we feed our CSA, we had enough to stock a table at our weekly market, and also supplied regular events for the new One-Community Co-Op and several local vendors!
It continues to amaze me how much food can be grown in so little space.

Let me grow your food for you and inflation-proof your grocery bill!
I am taking reservations for next Season's CSA right now.
The Season is expected to run October 16 - May 7, giving you 30 weeks of veggies. $550 for Bi-weekly (Most Popular), $1100 for a weekly share.

There were/are lots of projects...

Our old (inherited) Nursery tables had finally seen their last days. It was time to build new ones specifically for our space, and with retail shoppers in mind instead of maximizing the square footage for production; That meant taller tables, wider walkways, and skinnier tables that you can reach all the way across.

First, we had to dismantle the old ones in place because they were too big to move.
I didn't want to continue to have to pull weeds, or spray for weeds, under our new tables, so we also cleared and graded the ground (by hand, with rakes) as we removed old tables, so that we could roll out some new landscape fabric for our floor.

I started this in February, the absolute worst time ever, because I love doing things the hard way! :) But really, I just had the right help at the right time, and now that a lot of that is done, I am so grateful to not be doing it in this heat!
Massive infrastructure projects DURING the farm season are generally not recommended. haha

I also wanted to get all the old irrigation up off the ground and tables, and hanging from the roof. Last week we assembled and hung a completely new irrigation system in the Nursery! I am not a plumber or a carpenter.

In short, there's been a lot going on in the background, and its all to make things a little more enjoyable for you when you're visiting us at the Farm/Nursery/Farmstand!

By the way, did you know that we're open every week on-site so you can buy your Produce or Plants straight from the source?
Every Saturday from 9a-1p, come see me at the Nursery, that's also one of the Farms, that also serves as a Farmstand: 1740 21st St N., St Petersburg, FL 33713 (https://maps.app.goo.gl/AAwfHLPBScYvErKt5)
WE NOW HAVE BREAD!! Our friends at Pretty Good Bread Co have been joining us every-other Saturday for a fresh sourdough drop. I highly recommend pre-ordering, otherwise, be early and be lucky! The next date will be 6/27, and you can bookmark the pre-order site HERE (https://pretty-good-bread.square.site/) . I also always keep some 12oz jars of Honey from Queen & Colony.
Bread, Honey, Plants, Produce... I can't think of anything else you could possibly need from us!

The main farm season here in Pinellas is over, but I'm still harvesting the best of what's left, I've still got Lettuce and Arugula, Okra, Eggplant, Zucchini, Onions, Peppers, and now we're starting to get into fruit season!
I just got the first Mangoes of the season this morning, and I've got a huge pile of lychees that might be our first and only this summer, Passionfruit, Dragonfruit, Wax Jambu and a few bananas this week.

There's also tons of edible plants and fruit trees you can plant right now! I've got them, and I'll show you how to eat through the summer!

When can you shop?
