Some nurses care for patients. Others leave a mark on a family that lasts a lifetime. For one mom, Kim Hand was that nurse.

During her son's 21-day NICU stay, Kim became a steady source of comfort in the midst of fear and uncertainty. She offered expert care and reassuring words when they were needed most. She encouraged precious skin-to-skin moments, patiently guided a new mom through every step, and helped transform feelings of helplessness into hope.

In her nomination, Baby Zach's mom shared, "She made me feel as if my son was in the safest, best hands and as a mother, there is no greater gift than that peace of mind." She went on to describe Kim as "an angel on earth," whose compassion shines through every interaction with patients and families.

Kaleigh tried GLP‑1 weight loss medications when she began looking for ways to improve her health. She knew they helped many people, but they didn’t work for her. She then decided to pursue bariatric surgery at Penn Medicine.

Some people make a hospital room feel a little less like a hospital. For patients on our 4th Floor Acute Care Unit, Heidi Wittick is one of those people.

During one patient's stay, Heidi's compassion left a lasting impression. They shared that from the moment she entered the room, she brought a warm, comforting presence. Her genuine kindness and positive attitude helped turn a difficult hospital experience into one filled with dignity and comfort. Another patient praised Heidi for combining "the highest standard" of professionalism with compassion, saying she made their stay as comfortable as possible.

Sometimes the support new moms need extends far beyond the hospital walls. When Hannah Groh's son arrived a month early, breastfeeding didn't come as easily as she had hoped. But through Penn Medicine Doylestown Health's breastfeeding support group, she found encouragement, expert guidance, and a community that helped her reach a milestone she once thought felt out of reach.

"The breastfeeding support group became such an important part of our journey, giving me the encouragement and confidence I needed each week," Hannah shared. "With their support, I went from exclusively pumping and bottle feeding to exclusively breastfeeding, and watching my son thrive has been incredibly rewarding."

Along the way, Hannah found something she wasn't expecting: friendship.

"Through the group, I met Caitlin, and we discovered that our sons were born on the very same day and will one day attend the same school together. The support, friendship, and sense of community we've found through this group have made the journey even more meaningful."

For Caitlin Smajda, the group has been a source of support through two breastfeeding journeys.

"It's meant so much to me to have the support of this group for my first and second baby," she said. "I've been able to get free one-on-one help with breastfeeding and meet wonderful other moms in my area. Each week, the support group helps us come together as we go through the journey of breastfeeding and new motherhood."

The new Associate Wellness Cart at Penn Medicine Doylestown Hospital recently got a little sweeter, thanks to Butler Elementary School’s Girl Scout Troop 2281. Troop members recently stopped by with a generous donation of 60 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies for our hospital team.

Knowing that our community appreciates and cares for them means so much to our staff. And few things bring comfort quite like Girl Scout Cookies! What a wonderful addition to our wellness cart, an initiative that supports our hard-working caregivers with snacks, wellness resources, and moments of encouragement.

Meet Hongjun Song and Guo-li Ming, high school sweethearts from Wuhan, China, who are now married and leading a massive brain research lab at Penn Medicine.

Their path to creating "mini brains" to study cancer and neurological diseases was anything but a straight line. For example, moving across the country for research roles, raising a newborn during a PhD program, and balancing two high-powered scientific tracks that slowly twined together over decades.

Today, their joint vision has pushed stem-cell human models into a whole new era to help discover real-time treatments for patients. Their latest breakthrough uses these 3D brain organoids grown directly from patient tumor samples to act as real-time treatment "avatars".

Because these mini-tumors maintain a 98% to 99% genetic match to the patient, scientists can safely test thousands of drugs simultaneously to find the perfect treatment plan.

Leaving a loved one in the hospital is never easy. But sometimes an extraordinary caregiver brings a sense of peace that changes everything. For one family, that person was Oanh Tran, a patient care technician at Penn Medicine Doylestown Hospital.

"Leaving my mother was so hard, but with Oanh present, I knew she was safe and watched over," shared the grateful family member. "She was quick to act, incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and carried her gift of caring with such purpose. She leads, helps, and loves the sick—truly doing God's work."

Sometimes, it's the smallest acts of kindness that make the biggest difference. For one patient at Penn Medicine Doylestown Health, an unexpected diagnosis changed everything in an instant. In the middle of the fear and uncertainty, they found comfort in Shawna Mikityuk, a nurse who seemed to know exactly what they needed, even before they asked.

"As a patient who got really awful news, I cannot express just how meaningful Shawna's care was at a moment where my mind couldn't process what I was up against. Thank you, Shawna, for your beautiful compassion," the patient said.

Whether it was making sure they had the chance to take a shower, surprising them with a ginger ale, or simply being present during the hardest moments, Shawna shared in her patient's emotions and made sure they never felt alone.

It is this extraordinary combination of empathy, clinical excellence, and genuine human connection that makes Shawna a DAISY Award recipient.
