Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) uses energy, similar to microwave energy, to impair or disable normal function of nerves.

For pain management, the RF energy is sent through precisely placed needles to target specifically selected nerves that are responsible for transmitting unwanted pain signals. After treating the nerves, pain signals from the treated nerves are greatly reduced, with results lasting in most instances.

Before RFA, we perform test injections called medial branch blocks to confirm the exact source of your pain. If you experience significant temporary relief after these diagnostic injections, you may be a strong candidate for RFA.

RFA procedures are considered for long-term pain conditions, especially of the neck, lower back or arthritic joints that haven’t been successfully treated with other methods.

This last weekend, Dr. Jeremy Joyal and Geoff Osmond, NP-C had the opportunity to attend the Vertebrogenic Pain Summit in Indianapolis.

This was a great meeting where they were able to share their experience treating this specific cause of low back pain and discuss best practices for this condition with colleagues from across the country.
