The words we use to talk about aging matter more than we often realize.

By choosing more inclusive terms, like “older adults” instead of “seniors” or “community” instead of “facility,” we can help shift the narrative around aging.

According to research led by Yale University professor Becca Levy, people with more positive perceptions of aging lived, on average, 7.5 years longer than those with more negative views.

But the benefits of positive aging go far beyond longevity alone.

When we embrace a more positive view of growing older, we can improve our quality of life AND help create communities where people of all ages feel valued, included, and celebrated.

Ageism Awareness Month is the perfect opportunity to shine a light on the importance of reframing how we think, talk, and feel about aging ALL month long!

By simply dropping the “ly” in "elderly", we shift away from language that can reinforce negative stereotypes about aging and toward language that recognizes people for who they are, not just their age.
