The University of Minnesota Duluth for Seniors program is a treasure for lifelong learners.

As Wendy Larrivy, University for Seniors Program Director, shares, "With each new term, there's an excitement in the air as kindred spirits come together, anticipating the experience of learning. With shared experiences, wonderful lasting friendships are formed."

Be sure to check out the past classes, lectures, and cultural and social opportunities at: https://university-seniors.d.umn.edu

The traditional learn-work-retire model is outdated, as more people are working throughout their lives.

Lifelong learning supports workforce participation, economic mobility, and social engagement (AARP/Inside Higher Ed, 2025).

Here in Duluth, we’re lucky to have higher education partners like the University of Minnesota Duluth, The College of St. Scholastica, and Lake Superior College helping create welcoming opportunities for learners of all ages.

Because our communities (and workplaces) thrive when we make room for people of all ages and stages of life to keep learning!

Behind the Duluth Age-Friendly initiative is Mimi Stender, Quality of Life Through Longevity Advocate and Founder of Duluth Aging Support, and Georgia Lane, Director of Aging Initiatives with Ecolibrium3.

As a passionate lifelong learner herself, Georgia shares, "Creating spaces and opportunities for people of all ages to learn, connect, and grow together is a foundational aspect of an age-friendly community. And there are so many opportunities around town! ”

One of those opportunities? Ecolibrium3's FREE How to Grow Root Vegetables Workshop this Saturday, May 30, from 10:30–11:30 a.m. at the Urban Farm at Lake Superior College 🌱

Each growing season, Ecolibrium3 hosts workshops for adults of all ages. These workshops include hands-on lessons in growing produce at home and on the farm, as well as plant science.

Earlier this month, Georgia Lane, Director of Aging Initiatives at Ecolibrium3, had the opportunity to speak with students at Rock Ridge about reframing aging, challenging age-related stereotypes, and the power of intergenerational connections.

Thanks again to the students and educators for welcoming us into the conversation with open arms.

Because creating an age-friendly community starts with how we collectively talk about aging.
