According to Thorn's 2025 research, 1 in 5 teens has faced a serious online safety concern most had no name for until it happened to them.

That gap — between what's happening and what kids have language for — is exactly what puts them at risk.

New on the blog: how online manipulation actually targets teens, why it fools even attentive parents, and what protects kids most. Comes with a free printable checklist.

So many of the children I sit with carry a quiet kind of worry — the kind that shows up as "I don't want to go" or "I don't want to try" long before anyone names it as anxiety.

That's the heart of Stacy Phipps Faces Her Fears the H-E-R-O Way.

Stacy is a curious, sensitive girl who finds new things — new friends, new situations — genuinely hard. With the steady support of her therapist, Dr. Simon, she doesn't just "get over" her fears. She learns a simple, repeatable way through them, the H-E-R-O way:

Smile and say "Hi" to a new classmate. Make the "Effort" to ask to play. Show "Respect" by accepting her classmate's differences. "Observe" how her classmate responds.

It's a small sequence, but it gives children something concrete to hold onto in a moment that otherwise just feels big and scary — and it gives parents language for what bravery can actually look like, one small step at a time.

I wrote this book because I wanted children who feel this way to see themselves in a story — and I wanted the parents reading alongside them to have language for what's happening underneath the surface, not just the behavior on top of it.

If this sounds like a child or family you know, I'd love for this story to find its way to them: https://a.co/d/0ggkUb0M

My children’s storybook is a great resource for children who have difficulty with calming down.

Every behavior tells a story.
When we learn to look beneath the surface, we often discover that what appears to be defiance, avoidance, or emotional outbursts may actually reflect a child who is overwhelmed and struggling to cope.
In this FREE 20-minute parent mini workshop, I’ll share practical insights to help you:
✔️ Recognize the signs of emotional overload
✔️ Understand why behavior is often communication
✔️ Respond in ways that support your child’s emotional well-being
As a bonus, you’ll also receive a Companion Reflection Worksheet to help you apply these ideas to your own family.
💙 Simply scan the QR code to access the free workshop and download your worksheet.
Because when we better understand what’s happening beneath the surface, we can respond with greater empathy, confidence, and effectiveness.

🌞One of the biggest misconceptions about summer is that children need to be busy all day.
In reality, many children benefit from a gentle balance of routine, independence, creativity, movement, and downtime.
The best summer schedule isn’t the one that looks perfect on paper—it’s the one that helps your child feel successful, connected, and emotionally regulated.
What is one thing that has worked well for your family this summer?

For more than 19 years, I have had the privilege of working alongside children, teens, families, educators, and community members.
Throughout that journey, my work has taken many forms—from psychological assessment and counseling to workshops, educational resources, children’s literature, teaching, and parent education. While the settings and experiences may differ, the mission has always remained the same: helping people better understand themselves, build on their strengths, and reach their potential.
This video is a reflection of that journey, the work I love, and the heart behind Educating Youth Services.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey.
