The Truth Behind Online Ministry Money Schemes

You sit in the dark on your living room couch after putting the kids to bed, staring at an influencer on your phone screen. She is sitting in a clean kitchen with an open Bible and an iced coffee, smiling warmly into the camera.

I was in those rooms.

Jessica Wiltshire currently charges 597 dollars for Prophetic Platforms, promising Holy Spirit mentorship to build kingdom wealth. Across TikTok, accounts like Liza Rose push courses by telling exhausted mothers that buying is an act of prophetic faith and a divine assignment.

You compare her calm life to your unpaid bills and feel an ache for purpose. You were taught in charismatic church circles that an ordinary life is failure, and that without a prophetic mantle, you are useless to God. You hand over grocery money, hoping to step into your calling.

Then you log into the member portal: the training teaches you to get on camera, fake that effortless lifestyle, and sell that same course to another struggling woman for a commission.

The manipulation mechanics are obvious, but the theological charge is far worse: this is false doctrine. It treats God Almighty as an investment broker and the Holy Spirit as an algorithm strategy.

In 1 Timothy 6:5, Scripture warns us against those who are: “depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.”

In 2 Peter 2:3, the Apostle Peter exposes this exact greed: “And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.”

When a woman fails to make sales, leaders blame her spiritual temperature, claiming she lacked faith to decree a harvest. The influencer keeps the money for luxury living, while the wounded woman is left broke in religious shame.

Godliness is not a financial vehicle. In ourselves, we are never enough. Christ’s finished work is entirely sufficient. You do not need to buy an influencer’s course to matter to God. You walk out of a high-control charismatic church, sit in your car, and realize nobody prepared you for the disorientation of leaving false theology.

I was in those rooms.

You spent years chasing emotional hype, striving, and trying to decree your breakthrough into existence. Then the fog clears. You are hit with quiet, disorienting grief when you realize almost every single verse you memorized was ripped out of context to serve a formula or keep you compliant.

The deepest grief is realizing you spent decades in church without ever hearing the true gospel. You knew religious performance. You knew exhaustion, striving, and how to chase the next spiritual high. But you never knew the peace of resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

Then comes the intimidation.

You walk into a room with women who grew up in healthy, biblically sound churches. They understand sound doctrine and talk about Scripture with ease. You feel completely behind, embarrassed, and terrified to speak because your foundation was built on emotional hype and goosebumps. You feel like an outsider who wasted years.

That shame is rooted in the very legalism that trapped you. God’s truth does not work on an institutional hierarchy.

In Ephesians 2:8 to 9, Scripture reminds us: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

In ourselves, we are never enough. Christ’s finished work is entirely sufficient. You do not have to perform, earn your seat, or prove yourself to anyone in that room. You are resting in unearned grace.

Inside high-control charismatic systems, I was taught that questioning a leader was rebellion against God.

We were told that speaking up brought a curse because you were touching “God’s anointed.” Silence was demanded to protect platforms. That teaching is a lie designed to keep sheep paralyzed in religious performance.

In those systems, compliance is enforced through fear and striving. When the gospel of grace opened my eyes around age 50, I realized Christ’s finished work set me free from religious gatekeepers. Resting in unearned grace broke that fear.

I was in those rooms. Four biblical convictions broke the fear of speaking truth:

1. We do not answer to religious gatekeepers.
Abusive leaders claim your standing depends on them. Scripture teaches we are justified by grace through faith in Christ. A pastor did not purchase your redemption, and no leader holds your soul.

2. Speak truth to false doctrine.
Remaining silent while legalism harms believers is not unity. False doctrines trap sheep in guilt. Exposing those lies with Scripture is obedience to God.

3. Decades in those rooms are redeemed by God.
The confusion was not wasted. God uses that pain to forge discernment that points hurting women to Christ.

4. Fear God, not man.
Leaders demand a loyalty belonging only to the Lord. A leader did not save you and cannot condemn you.

In Proverbs 29:25, Scripture reminds us: “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”

In Galatians 1:10, Scripture states: “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

If you read the caption, you would know this is not about churches where the pastoral family serves selflessly, helps their congregation, and stewards well. Praise God for healthy pastors and families who do that.

This post is specifically about the ones that fall under this pattern: where ministry is operated like an unaccountable family business, and where sheep are hurt, silenced, and run off.

A healthy pastoral family responds with grief and compassion when they hear about sheep being wounded. They do not get defensive, tell hurting people to shut up, or call exposing abuse “the devil’s work.” Scripture repeatedly tells us to beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing. Warning God’s people about wolves is biblical obedience, so calling that demonic is completely backwards.

I came out of these systems myself. I do this work because we have to help the ones who cannot easily run away or leave due to spiritual manipulation, fear, and family ties.

If your church is healthy, this was never about you. But I will never stop speaking up for the sheep who were wounded by the ones that do.

In our comments, someone wrote: “The year before I left the church cult I was in for 20 years, the pastor installed his daughter as worship pastor and son-in-law as youth pastor... They attach the title pastor to everything to create a power play so people won’t speak up. It is an MLM scheme. Every time I needed real help, it was just ‘I will pray for you’ while the family was helped.”

Pablo and I sat down to answer this because that comment exposes how dynastic churches run.

When a church operates like a family business, the congregation provides unpaid labor and tithes, while power, payroll, and influence belong to a single household. Relatives receive spiritual titles without meeting biblical character standards. The title is manufactured to make the family untouchable.

If an ordinary church member needs practical support, they get an empty slogan. But if anyone questions financial transparency or why the board is stacked with relatives, leadership weaponizes authority.

This dynamic is built on a destructive doctrinal lie: that God ordained pastoral family dynasties and commanded believers to protect a leader’s bloodline over biblical truth.

Scripture gives no authority to family empires. In 1 Timothy 3:2, Scripture states: “Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach.”

In 1 Timothy 5:19 to 20, Scripture records: “Do not admit a charge against an elder except on the evidence of two or three witnesses. As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all, so that the rest may stand in fear.”

I was in those rooms, and I watched how dynastic loyalty replaced the gospel.

God never commanded you to bankroll a pastor’s personal empire. In ourselves we are never enough, but Christ is entirely sufficient. He is the true Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep, and His truth sets you free.

The moment you ask, “Where does the Bible say that?” suddenly YOU are the problem.

You’re “bitter.”
You have a “religious spirit.”
You’re “touching God’s anointed.”

But nobody is opening the Bible to answer your question.

I came out of this. I know what it is to feel guilty for questioning something that should have been questioned—and afraid that disagreeing with a leader meant disobeying God.

“Touch not my anointed” is not a shield against examining a pastor’s doctrine. Psalm 105:14–15 describes God protecting His people from harm. It does not forbid Christians from testing what someone teaches.

The Bereans examined the Scriptures to see whether Paul’s teaching was true—and they were called noble for it. Paul did not demand unquestioning loyalty. (Acts 17:11)

A pastor’s title does not place his words above examination. Neither does a claim that “God told me.”

And sister, you don’t have to know every theological term before you can ask someone to show you a teaching in its biblical context.

Christ is the head of His church. The shepherds who serve Him are accountable to His Word.

Keep opening your Bible. Test what you hear—including what I share. The goal is to know Christ and follow Him in truth.

When an unhealthy church is the only church you’ve ever known, you may recognize the language of control before you recognize the kindness of faithful care.

You know what it means to be watched, corrected, needed, and warned.

But have you experienced being patiently heard? Being cared for when you have nothing left to give? Asking an honest question without having your loyalty put on trial?

Some women were taught to call control “covering,” exhaustion “faithfulness,” and silence “honor.” They need help learning what Scripture actually requires of those who shepherd God’s people.

God calls pastors to lead by example without domineering over the flock (1 Peter 5:2–3). They must be gentle, self-controlled, and accountable to the truth they teach (1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:7–9).

And the whole church is called to bear burdens, weep with those who weep, and care for members who seem weaker (Galatians 6:2; Romans 12:15; 1 Corinthians 12:22–26).

Faithful churches teach repentance, confront sin, and practice biblical correction. Their leaders also receive correction. Their responsibility to shepherd others never places them above God’s Word.

No congregation does all of this perfectly. Look for what happens when someone fails: honest confession, appropriate accountability, practical care, and repentance that bears fruit.

Your hope rests in Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for His people. His death and resurrection—not your usefulness to a ministry or a pastor’s approval—are the foundation of peace with God through faith (Romans 5:1).

You may still be learning what faithful care looks like. Scripture gives you a standard by which to recognize it.

Save this as you learn—and share it with a woman who has only known the unhealthy. 🤍
