🐾 The Healing Power of Pet Therapy 🐾

My client and I were absolutely thrilled to welcome Abbey, our amazing therapy dog, to last week’s recreation therapy session! 💙

The joy on my client’s face was a beautiful reminder that pet therapy visits comes in many forms. Through gentle interactions, petting, eye contact, conversation, and shared moments of laughter, Abbey helped create an environment filled with comfort, connection, and purpose.

Therapeutic benefits of pet therapy include:
🐶 Reduces anxiety and stress
💙 Promotes relaxation and emotional well-being
😊 Encourages smiles, laughter, and positive mood
🧠 Stimulates memory, attention, and cognitive engagement
🤝 Increases social interaction and communication
💪 Supports fine and gross motor skills through reaching, petting, and movement
❤️ Provides unconditional companionship and decreases feelings of loneliness
🌱 Enhances overall quality of life and meaningful engagement

At Nourish Wellness & Recreation Therapy, we believe that every interaction is an opportunity to foster connection, joy, and independence. Abbey’s visit reminded us that sometimes the smallest paws leave the biggest impact. 🐾

🎨✨ Ceramic Fun! ✨🎨

This week, my client enjoyed a creative ceramic painting activity at the senior center. It was a wonderful opportunity to engage in a meaningful leisure activity while building skills and having fun in a supportive community setting.

Benefits of ceramic painting include:
🖌️ Encourages creativity and self-expression
🧠 Supports cognitive stimulation, concentration, and problem-solving
🤲 Strengthens fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination
😊 Promotes relaxation and stress reduction
💬 Encourages social interaction and community participation
🌟 Builds confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment

It was great to see my client engaged, focused, and proud of their work. Recreation therapy activities like these help promote overall well-being while creating opportunities for joy, connection, and personal growth.

The Therapeutic Power of music 🎵

Music has a powerful way of supporting the mind and body. It can help regulate the nervous system, improve mood, spark memories, and create connection—even when words are hard to find.

In recreation therapy, music is more than entertainment—it’s a therapeutic tool that supports emotional expression, cognition, movement, and engagement across all abilities and ages.

You don’t need any special training or instruments to get started—just presence and a familiar song.

Try these simple music-based activities:

Music & Memory Check-In
Play a familiar song and gently ask:
• “What does this remind you of?”
• “What memories come up for you?”

Rhythm Copy Game
Tap or clap a simple beat and invite them to copy it. Then switch roles.

Lyric Completion
Pause a well-known song and see if they can fill in the next line.

Movement to Music
Encourage swaying, tapping, or chair dancing to the rhythm.

Calming Music Break
Use soft instrumental music for grounding during stress or overstimulation.

Simple Instrument Play
Shakers, bells, or everyday objects can become tools for expression and engagement.

Music meets people where they are—supporting connection, regulation, and presence in the moment.

• Social engagement through conversations with staff, peers, and other visitors
• Cognitive stimulation by learning about different animals and their care
• Community participation by exploring local resources and practicing independence
• Physical activity through walking and navigating the store
