I was asked what Bowen therapy is. And here is my answer.
It’s like acupuncture without needles.
It uses fingers to gently move, press, and roll over fascia and at the specific points in which you do it, it sends messages to the nervous system to begin to reorganize itself in a restful state. A lot of the areas to do a “Bowen move” correlate to points along meridians and like acupuncture there is a therapeutic rest in between “moves” so the body can “hear” the message. And these rests happen throughout the session rather than getting loaded up with moves, like you would get loaded up with needles, with a rest at the end. There is a beautiful ebb and flow to the work.
Here’s the challenge I have seen in my clients and potential clients since becoming a Master Practitioner.
It’s not always instantaneous and it’s super gentle. So for those who have their minds set on deep tissue massage where they can feel the work in a more obvious way because that’s what their brain needs to “hear”- there is a lot of resistance to try a modality that could help break through fascial, stress, emotional barriers being held onto by the body in a less invasive way.
This image is a trail on Mt Aggie- Sweet Fern. A gentle slope just like Bowen. But ones you start- you feel the burn. 😉
