Why do old experiences still affect us today?

One of the foundations of EMDR therapy is something called the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) Model.

The idea is simple: our brains are naturally designed to heal.

Most of the time, when something difficult happens, our brain processes the experience, learns from it, and stores it away as a memory. It becomes part of our story without continuing to control our present.

But when an experience is overwhelming, traumatic, or happens during a time when we don’t have the resources to cope, that memory can become “stuck.” Instead of feeling like it’s in the past, it continues to show up in the present through anxiety, shame, people-pleasing, panic, emotional reactions, or negative beliefs like:

• “I’m not good enough.”
• “I’m not safe.”
• “I have to keep everyone happy.”
• “Something is wrong with me.”

These reactions aren’t signs that you’re broken, they’re signs that your brain hasn’t had the chance to fully process what happened.

EMDR helps your brain do the work it was designed to do.

Rather than erasing memories, EMDR helps the brain reprocess them so they become part of your past instead of something that keeps showing up in your present. Many people notice that the memory remains, but the emotional charge, distress, and negative beliefs begin to fade.

Healing isn’t about forgetting.
It’s about helping your nervous system finally recognize that what happened then isn’t happening now.

💙 Your brain already knows how to heal. Sometimes it just needs the right conditions to finish the process.

Saying NO, not adding one more thing, being good with white space are all hard to do.
Finding balance sometimes requires us to get a little uncomfortable with being bored. Breathe into the space and start learning to enjoy those quiet Moments.
