You can teach timing, technique, styling, body mechanics, musical structure. But you can’t hand someone their expression.

That develops through learning to notice more: how a movement feels, where your weight is, what the music is asking for, what you actually want to respond to, and how changing the quality of a movement changes what it communicates.

That’s why two dancers can do the exact same step and say something completely different with it.

These 7 ideas are a glimpse into the way we think about movement at Movewise, and what we’ll be exploring in Intuitive Expression this Friday.

Not more movement for the sake of more movement.

Soft light, crystal bowls, Reiki, and an intimate room with nowhere else to be. 🌑

Last night’s New Moon Rejuvenation was full, quiet, and deeply restorative.

There’s something special about practicing in a space this small — enough room to settle in together, but intimate enough for me to move through the room and offer individual Reiki throughout the experience.

If you’d like to join the next one, I recommend registering early once September’s date is released. These gatherings will stay intentionally intimate. 💛

And I’m curious… should we make room for a Full Moon gathering too? 🌕

This Sunday, our Monthly Movewise Ritual is centered around rejuvenation through guided meditation, crystal bowl sound, and Reiki.

Over the years, I’ve become much more interested in what helps a dancer become more whole.

Train to your personal max capacity. But also learn how to listen to your body. Developing artistry. Having space to recover. Being part of a community that challenges you and holds you at the same time.

That’s really what Movewise membership has grown into.

Some weeks that looks like company rehearsal. Some weeks it’s body movement and styling. Sometimes it’s a sound bath. Sometimes it’s a workshop that asks you to get out of your head and explore.

I wanted to build something that supported the dancer beyond just learning more steps.

This is what August looks like inside Movewise. 💛

Six years of Movewise | Part 2 💛

This chapter was about expansion.

Splitting my weeks between San Francisco and San Diego. Taking Miraqui on the road to train and perform at festivals. Creating our first-ever Miraqui dance training retreat. Finding new ways to build community beyond the walls of a weekly class.

There was so much movement during these years between cities, stages, airports, rehearsals, and new experiences together.

And tucked into these memories is someone very special. 💛

Gene was Miraqui’s first and only male company member, and we lost him tragically a few years later. Seeing him dancing, laughing, traveling, and sharing these experiences with us again is one of the many reasons I’m so grateful my sister took the time to preserve these memories.

Six years later, some of the people in these clips are still part of my life, some have gone in different directions, and some we carry with us in a different way.

But every one of them is part of the story.

Thank you again to my sister for giving me the gift of being able to look back and remember it all. 🐞🌻💛

There’s something special about a room full of dancers who genuinely love the music.

Not just the newest songs or the latest trends, but the rhythms, orchestras, and social culture that built this dance in the first place.

That’s the spirit behind Old School. A new monthly collaboration between Movewise and Uniendo Culturas.

Each month we’ll bring together great music, quality instruction, and a community of dancers who value connection as much as technique.

If you think this looks ridiculous… good. 😂

Movement exploration isn’t meant to look polished. It isn’t choreography, and it definitely isn’t performance.

It’s research.

It’s asking, “What happens if I move this way?” instead of, “Am I doing this correctly?”

This kind of exploration has had a profound impact on my dancing. It’s helped me become more expressive, more adaptable, and more connected to the music. Not because I learned more choreography, but because I learned more about movement.

If you’ve ever feel like your dancing isn’t as natural, expressive, or free as you’d like, this is exactly what we’ll be exploring in Intuitive Expression.
