We could probably win some kind of contest for how often we say “community” and “culture” around here. But the truth is, it’s not branding—it’s just what happens when a lot of creative, curious people share space and cross paths over time.

Take John Roy Wilson, for example. Around the Abbey, you might know him as a magician, a clown, or the guy who can get a whole room singing. But his creative life goes far beyond that. John Roy works across drawing, painting, pottery, sculpture, and carving; always following that instinct most of us had as kids to make something out of nothing.

He spent 25 years teaching art, after stepping into the role almost on a leap of faith, and never really stopped learning himself. His work is shaped by a lifetime of experiences, from classrooms to community college studios to time spent as a medic during the Vietnam era, where even then he was observing, documenting, and creating.

He shared a line that’s stuck with us: “All children are artists. The challenge is to remain one as we grow older.”

Here's a glimpse of some of John's artwork. It’s thoughtful, a little unexpected, and very much his—just like the people who make this place what it is.

Ready to meet another integral member of the community here at The Abbey?

We're pleased to introduce Jerry, our beloved maintenance manager. Jerry brings a lifetime of experience into his work—rooted in service, resilience, and care for others. From Marine training to facilities leadership, he has consistently shown up with integrity and dedication. We’re proud to have him as part of our community and grateful for the steady presence he provides.

Residents can't say enough good things about Jerry. In fact, he won the Olympus Peak Performer Award in 2025. Check out the video to hear all the glowing reviews.

Thoughtful, complex, multifaceted— more than meets the eye.

If you've seen The Abbey, you might think we're talking about our building. While all those things could apply to our breathtaking physical structure, there's even more depth and brilliance inside these walls, and the residents are the source.

Enjoy a snippet of creativity from a resident, Bonnie, with one of her poems for the Valentine's season. 💘

Like most, we believe that what makes a place feel like home is the people you fill it with. From residents to staff, every single person helps create our warm environment.

We're excited to introduce some of the folks who help make The Abbey the place that we love through our "Getting to Know You" series. Make sure to follow us to stay up to date!

Meet Joseph: From years in the car and real estate industries to life on the road in a camper van and travels across Europe, Joseph’s path has been anything but ordinary. Along the way, food became both a craft and a calling—leading him to restaurant work, catering, and eventually his own wholesale bakery, Pretzel Joe’s. Today, he brings that hard-earned experience, curiosity, and care into our kitchen and community.
