Today, we worked with a sweet boy on /s/ blends! was the perfect helper and loved following the commands that he gave!

There are so many ways to incorporate a therapy dog into articulation therapy!

We also used petting Finlea as a strategy for consonant blends. We pet her down her back for the /s/ sound and tapped before her tail for the /t/ to make sure we didn’t delete any sounds.

MEET STEPHANIE!

With over 20 years of experience in the field of speech-language pathology, I’ve had the privilege of working around the world in diverse settings, including schools, private practices, early intervention, adult home health, NICU, and outpatient pediatric clinics. I earned both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders/Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Cincinnati. I’m currently pursuing my doctoral degree in speech-language pathology with a research focus on how the presence of a therapy dog influences children's reading behaviors from Valdosta State University.

Prior to deciding to start my doctoral program, I learned about animal-assisted intervention and knew that I wanted to dive into this topic. Our family got a puppy, we completed all of the training and Finlea became a certified therapy dog through Alliance of Therapy Dogs. We have been volunteering since 2022 but it's always been a dream to incorporate her into speech therapy.

In 2025, I founded Paws to Communicate, LLC as a way to unite my two greatest passions: pediatric speech therapy and therapy dogs. Through in-home services and optional canine-assisted sessions with Finlea, a certified therapy dog, I strive to create engaging, supportive, and motivating therapy experiences that meet each child where they are.

My mission is not only to support children’s communication but also to raise awareness of the powerful role therapy dogs can play in enhancing motivation, confidence, and progress.

MEET FINLEA!

Finlea, the therapy dog, is a 4-year-old mini Goldendoodle. She has been certified as a therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs since March 2022. She holds the Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog Excellent titles, both recognized by the American Kennel Club. She has completed over 250 visits in various settings, including schools, libraries, military installations, and assisted
living facilities.

Most recently, she has been visiting the local libraries so that children have the opportunity to read to her.

Therapy dogs provide many benefits. They help children learn compassion, empathy, and responsibility. Trained therapy dogs offer comfort and non-judgmental love, with studies to prove that even a short time with a dog can decrease anxiety levels and increase emotional security. Research shows that the presence of a therapy dog can increase motivation during therapy sessions and reading tasks.
