October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and a special month for VIP as we celebrate our anniversary!

Since 1954, we have proudly served Genesee County by creating opportunities for adults with disabilities to build independence, develop new skills, and become more involved in their communities.

For over 70 years, our mission has remained the same: empowering individuals, celebrating abilities, and creating a more inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

This October, we celebrate not only our history, but also the individuals, families, staff, and community partners who make our work possible. Here's to continuing our mission and making a difference for years to come!

In September, the employment-to-population ratio for people with disabilities (ages 16–64) hit an all-time high of 40.3%; surpassing previous records set in May 2024, January 2025, and August 2026.

What’s driving the rise?
- More people with disabilities entering the workforce
- Many returning after being previously discouraged

Thank you to our friends at Dort Financial for choosing VIP to be a part of their Team Day of Service event today!

As part of Dort Financial’s annual Team Day of Service, their team comes together to give back to communities across Michigan by partnering with local nonprofit organizations. Through hands-on volunteer work, community cleanups, and support for local events, they help make a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.

We’re grateful they chose to spend part of their day serving our community!

Being without a job doesn’t automatically mean someone lacks drive or talent. For many, it’s the result of barriers that often go unnoticed; things like unstable housing, limited internet access, caregiving duties, disabilities, or discrimination based on race. These obstacles don’t just affect individuals; they hold back entire communities and economies. By removing these barriers, we create opportunities, strengthen communities, and ensure more people have a fair shot at success.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and this year’s theme is "Celebrating Value and Talent." People with disabilities bring skills, creativity, and perspective that strengthen every workplace. Yet, hiring barriers and bias still shut many out. Only about 38% of people with disabilities are employed, compared to 75% of those without disabilities.

This month is a chance to raise awareness, challenge bias, and promote inclusive practices that benefit everyone.

We will be "Celebrating Value and Talent" this National Disability Employment Awareness Month ( )! This is a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to promote inclusive employment across our community.

This yearly event began in 1945 as a weeklong national observance of the contributions of people with physical disabilities. In 1988, Congress designated the commemoration as NDEAM, which then evolved to acknowledge the importance of increasing employment opportunities for people with disabilities, including those with mental health conditions and other nonobvious disabilities.
