Francine Moody Hayes

Francine Moody Hayes passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at McLeod Health Dillon. Born on January 4, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Curtis and Gertrude Moody. Francine was a 1965 graduate of Lake View High School. She furthered her education at Florence Darlington Technical College and Coker College, finishing with her master’s in social work from the University of South Carolina. She served the P*e Dee region as a licensed social worker for 40 years. Francine also served for 20 years in the South Carolina National Guard and retired as Staff Sergeant.

Francine is survived by her son, Todd Hayes (Jaime) of Dillon; grandchildren, Ella and Griffin Hayes of Dillon; nieces, Lynn Foxworth of Conway, Johnna Shirley of Anderson, Charlene Frye of Myrtle Beach, and Trudy Gregorie Beatty of Ashburn, VA.

In addition to her parents, Francine was predeceased by her brother, Curtis Moody, Jr, and his wife, Catherine; and her sister, Nell Herring and her husband, John.

Christopher Ryan Wiggins

Christopher Ryan Wiggins, 37, of Florence, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Ryan was born in Florence, SC a son of Crystal Gladden Kairis and the late James Wiggins. He was a US Army veteran. He loved music and playing the drums, and loved to make people laugh.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Kristin (John) Specht; brother, Zachary (Heather) Clayton; maternal grandparents, Jerry (Joann) Gladden and Brenda Hall; paternal grandmother, Marge Gallagher Wiggins; aunts, Angela (Jeff) Thompson and Lori (Jeff) Wiggins; uncle, Michael Gladden; great-aunt, Chris (David) Wallace; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lamb’s Chapel, 3514 Southborough Road, Florence, SC 29501.

A church led memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at Lamb’s Chapel.

Cremation services are entrusted to Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home.

Fumi Miyaguni Hicks

She lived life to the fullest, and after 94 years on this earth, on October 19, 2026, Fumi M. Hicks went to live in the House of the Lord forever.

Fumi Miyaguni was born in 1932 in the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. She loved Okinawa, but after marrying her soulmate, Dewey Hicks, she left her homeland and started a new home in South Carolina. She filled that home with love. Fumi never met a stranger. She never let anyone leave her house without trying to feed them. She never let a day pass without praying. Smiles were the language she knew best, and songs were gifts she shared abundantly. Fumi’s husband, Dewey, precedes her in death. She is survived by 3 children- Debby Gandy, Peggy Meddaugh Urquhart (Ted), Linda Bryant (Kenney); 3 grandchildren- Eron Gandy, Elisa Gandy Pavia (Erik), and Hannah Gandy; 5 siblings and multiple nieces and nephews in Japan; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews of the Hicks family.

A celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 1, at 2pm at First Free Will Baptist Church in Florence, S.C. A visitation/reception will be held at the church following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Fumi’s church, First Free Will Baptist Church (Florence, SC), or to the Florence County Disabilities Foundation, or alternatively, think of Fumi and share a smile with everyone you meet today.

Destiny Flowers

Destiny Flowers, 94, of Florence, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2026.

Destiny was born in Gallivants Ferry, a daughter of the late Thomas Clyde Flowers and Nancy Bell Hardwick Flowers. She retired from AT&T after 30 years of service. She was a hardworking, dedicated, independent woman that loved her family. She enjoyed traveling, cruising, and flying.

In addition to her parents; she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kay S. McCaskill; a granddaughter; brother, Clyde Flowers; sisters, Libby Barfield, Eloise Owens, Jessie Hardwick, and Thomasene Best.

She is survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 21, 2026 in the chapel of Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, www.darlingtonhumane.org.

Gail McBride Shirley

On October 18, 2026, Gail McBride Shirley, 78, joined her Lord and Savior following a courageous battle with cancer.

Gail was the eldest child of five born to the late Robert Paul and Mary Lee Chase McBride in Newport News, Virginia, where she grew up and graduated from Ferguson High School in 1966. After graduating from Madison College, now James Madison University, she spent 19 years teaching business classes in the Newport News public school system.

In 1990, she married the love of her life, Richard Shirley, and moved to South Carolina, where they enjoyed countless hours looking for rare finds and great bargains in antique stores and thrift shops, both at home and wherever they travelled. Gail and Richard were active in the Church at Sandhurst in Florence until he passed away unexpectedly in 2007. While attending Sandhurst, Gail went on many mission trips, both in the United States and in other countries including Ukraine, Germany and Mexico.

Gail resided in Florence the remainder of her life, where she was a realtor and an antique dealer. She continued her travels and especially enjoyed the trips she took with her granddaughters. Remaining involved in the church, she was most recently attending Compassion Church in Florence.

A devoted friend, she was blessed with many close friendships and met with friends often. Throughout her illness, Gail remained positive and optimistic, more concerned about how her illness affected others than about her own comfort. In her final days, a steady stream of friends and family visited her, a kindness she deeply appreciated.

Gail is survived by her daughter Melissa Puckett Jackson and her son Bradley (Lindsey) Shives-Shirley, both of whom provided great support during her illness. She is also survived by her siblings, Peggy (Steve) Davenport of Phoenix, AZ, Robert (Sara) McBride III of Hartfield, VA, Gerry (Mark) Glascock of Seaford, VA, Richard McBride of DeBary, FL and grandchildren Abigail and Kristin Jackson and Adeline Shives-Shirley. She also has many surviving nieces , nephews and cousins.

A church led memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at Compassion Church. The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 pm at the church.

In lieu of flowers, Gail requests donations be made to Compassion Church of Florence or The Hope Center Ministries for Women in Florence in memory of Gail Shirley.

Leonard E. Singletary

Leonard E. Singletary, 90, of Florence, passed away on Friday, October 16, 2026 peacefully with his family by his side.

Mr. Singletary was born in Charleston, SC a son of the late Clifford McKenry Singletary and Marie Beckroge Singletary. He was a graduate of College of Charleston and received his Masters at Western Carolina University. Leonard was a longtime teacher, coach, and administrator that spent most of his career in Marion. He was a member of Marion Presbyterian Church and a member of the Marion Rotary Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Clifford Singletary, Jr. and sisters, Cora Lee Sweat and Gloria Neilson.

Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years, Judy Brown Singletary; sons, Gene Singletary, Jeff Singletary (Wendy), Michael Singletary (Susan), and Bryan Singletary (Lynn); grandchildren, Lexi Singletary, Grace Singletary, Ryan Singletary, and Drew Singletary.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, www.alzfdn.org.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 5:00 pm Sunday, October 18, 2026 at Calcutt-Dowling Funeral Home, 512 2nd Loop Road, Florence, SC 29505. A private graveside service will be held at Florence Memorial Gardens.
