A UC Berkeley-led study has found traces of toxic heavy metals — including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury — in tampons from 14 different brands. Researchers tested 30 tampon products and detected measurable concentrations of all 16 metals they screened for.

What makes this particularly concerning is where tampons are used. Vaginal tissue absorbs chemicals more readily than skin elsewhere on the body, making the potential for exposure higher than it might first appear.

The study stops short of confirming that these metals actually leach out of tampons or enter the bloodstream — more research is needed to determine that. But it does raise urgent questions about transparency, safety standards, and the near-total lack of regulation around chemicals in feminine hygiene products.

Millions of people use tampons every month for years on end. The fact that this is reportedly the first study to ever measure metals in these products says a great deal about how little oversight this category has received.
