đź’š May is Mental Health Awareness Month đź’š

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to remind our community that mental health conversations matter every day of the year — not just during moments of crisis.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for a young person is simply listen. Open conversations help build trust, connection, and resilience. When youth feel safe, seen, and supported, they are more likely to reach out before things become overwhelming.

At YScreen, we believe prevention, early identification, and compassionate support can change lives. A caring adult, a trusted friend, or one honest conversation can make more of a difference than we realize.

This month we’ve talked about early support, reducing stigma, asking for help, and creating safe spaces for youth to be heard. Let’s continue carrying those conversations forward beyond May.

And if you or someone you know is struggling, please remember: help is available, and no one has to walk through it alone. đź’š

✨ YScreen Youth Mental Health Art Contest ✨
This Mental Health Awareness Month, students from across the Fond du Lac area used their creativity to answer one powerful question:
“What does mental health mean to you?”

The honesty, courage, vulnerability, and hope reflected in these pieces moved us deeply. Every artwork submitted told a story and reminded us why conversations surrounding youth mental health matter so much. đź’š

We are incredibly proud to announce our 2026 featured student artists and winners:

🏆 Ella Demos – Fond du Lac High School
🏆 Madyson Bodart – STEM Academy
🏆 Malia Dobyns – Woodworth Middle School

A heartfelt thank you to every student, parent, educator, and supporter who helped make this event possible. Special thanks as well to Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts for displaying these incredible pieces for the community to experience.

🖼️ The full gallery can currently be viewed on the lower level at Thelma.

At YScreen, we believe youth voices matter — and these students proved just how powerful art can be in raising awareness, reducing stigma, and creating connection.

đź’š Together, we continue building a community where mental health conversations are welcomed, supported, and heard.

🤍 Sitting with Emotions 🤍

We often feel like we need to “fix” difficult emotions right away—but not every feeling needs to be solved.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is simply allow the feeling to be there đź’š

Try telling yourself:
“This is hard, and I can get through it.”

When we avoid or push emotions away, they often stick around longer. When we acknowledge them, they tend to pass more naturally.

This doesn’t mean you have to like the feeling—it just means you’re giving yourself space to experience it without judgment.

Over time, this builds emotional resilience and helps you feel less overwhelmed by your emotions.

Please join us in welcoming Stephanie Owen to the Fond du Lac Area YScreen Advisory Board! đź’š

Stephanie brings more than 35 years of experience in the mental health field, including over 30 years serving as a therapist in the Fond du Lac area. She is currently employed with Aurora Health Care and has extensive experience in private practice, with areas of expertise including children and family therapy, trauma, domestic abuse, and eating disorders. Throughout her career, she has worked with clients ranging in age from 5 to 87.

Stephanie was also involved with YScreen during its early years, making her return to the organization especially meaningful. A Fond du Lac native, she attended Ripon College and completed graduate studies through University of Wisconsin–Madison and University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys exercising, yoga, walking, reading, gardening, traveling, and working on projects around her 115-year-old vintage home. She is also a proud mom of four and grandmother of six.

We are so grateful to have Stephanie’s experience, compassion, and dedication helping guide the work we do for youth and families in our community. Welcome, Stephanie!

Asking for help is a skill đź’š

For Mental Health Awareness Month, we’ve been sharing tools you can use to support your mental health—and one of the most important (and often hardest) skills is reaching out for support.

Many of us are taught to handle things on our own, push through, or not “burden” others. But connection is a key part of mental health. Reaching out can help you:
✔️ Feel less alone
✔️ Gain perspective and support
✔️ Stay safe during difficult moments

It doesn’t always have to look like a big conversation. It can be:
đź’¬ Texting someone you trust
📞 Calling a support line
👥 Talking to a friend, family member, or professional

If you’re not sure where to start, we created this graphic with a variety of crisis and support lines for you to save and share.

Reaching out might feel uncomfortable at first—but like any skill, it gets easier with practice.

You don’t have to do this alone 💚

đź’š May is Mental Health Awareness Month đź’š

Week 2: The Importance of Early Support
Young people thrive when support comes early.

Mental health conversations don’t have to wait until there’s a crisis. When youth feel safe, heard, and supported, they are more likely to reach out and get the help they need.

At YScreen, we believe early emotional health support can make a lifelong difference. A caring adult, a trusted friend, or simply checking in with someone can have more impact than we realize.

By continuing open conversations and reducing stigma, we help create a community where young people know they are seen, valued, and never alone.

Let’s continue leading with compassion this month. 💚

YScreen was honored to be part of last week’s Women’s Empowerment Series Resource Fair hosted by We EmpowHer Wisconsin. 💜

This incredible series exists to support women experiencing crisis, major life transitions, and personal growth by connecting them with community resources and a strong network of support — and we were grateful to be included among so many amazing organizations making a difference in our community.

We loved connecting with attendees, sharing mental health resources, and creating positive encouragement through our YScreen Vibe Board. đź’š

Thank you to We EmpowHER for creating a space where women feel empowered, supported, and uplifted. We look forward to future opportunities to collaborate!
