Hospice provides scheduled visits and support based on the patient's individualized plan of care. It doesn't usually provide a caregiver at the bedside 24 hours a day.
Family members, friends, facility staff, or paid caregivers often provide day-to-day assistance between hospice visits. During certain short-term medical crises, eligible patients may receive a higher level of hospice care when clinically necessary.
Before hospice begins, ask who will visit, how often visits may occur, whom to contact when symptoms change, and what support the family may need to arrange.
Clear expectations help families feel more prepared.
