🪨FOUNDATION FRIDAY:
When “No” Becomes a Teaching Opportunity

Hearing “no” isn’t always easy for children—and learning how to handle it is an important life skill!

As parents, teachers, and therapists, we have opportunities to help children build flexibility, emotional regulation, and problem-solving skills in everyday moments.

✨ **A few ways to help:**

💙 **Acknowledge feelings.** It’s okay to feel disappointed when the answer is no.

đź’™ **Keep your response calm and consistent.** Children learn from how we respond, too.

đź’™ **Offer choices when appropriate.** Giving children options can help them practice flexibility while still feeling some control.

đź’™ **Reinforce flexibility.** Notice and praise moments when a child accepts an answer, communicates appropriately, or moves on to another activity.

Remember, the goal isn’t to prevent children from feeling disappointed. It’s to help them learn healthy ways to navigate disappointment and build skills they can use throughout life.

At First Foundations ABA Service, we believe strong foundations are built one small moment at a time. đź’™

Foundation Friday: Prompting

PROMPTING: HELPING WITHOUT CREATING DEPENDENCE

When a child is learning a new skill, they may need a little help to be successful.

That’s where prompts come in.

A prompt is any extra support we provide to help a child respond correctly — such as a gesture, visual cue, verbal direction, model, or physical assistance.

But here’s the important part:
The goal of prompting isn’t to help forever.
The goal is to help until they can do it independently.

For example:
👉 A child is learning to put on their shoes.
👟 We might point to the shoe.
👟 Then we might give a verbal cue.
👟 If needed, we may provide more assistance.

As the child becomes successful, we fade the prompt so they gradually take over the skill themselves.

That’s how we move from:
“I’ll help you.”
➡️ “You can do it with a little help.”
➡️ “You did it!”

At First Foundations, we aren’t just looking for a child to complete a task.

We’re building independence.
🧱 Build the skill. Fade the support. Grow independence.

🪨 Foundation Friday:
Give Choices, Not Commands

Sometimes a little control can go a long way.

When a child is struggling with transitions, directions, or being told “no,” try offering **two choices that are both okay with you.**

Instead of:
❌ “Put your shoes on.”
Try:
✅ “Do you want the blue shoes or the red shoes?”

Instead of:
❌ “Clean up your toys.”
Try:
✅ “Do you want to clean up the cars or the blocks first?”

You're still setting the expectation — but you're giving your child an appropriate way to have some control over what happens next.

**The goal isn't to let the child avoid the expectation. It's to make cooperation a little easier.**

Small changes in how we present an expectation can create big changes in how a child responds.

That's building a strong foundation. 🤍

🪨 FOUNDATION FRIDAY:
Why Predictability Matters

Have you ever noticed that a change that seems small to us can feel really big to a child?

For some learners, not knowing what comes next can create uncertainty, frustration, or anxiety. When we make the environment more predictable, we give children something important: information they can use to feel prepared. đź’š

Predictability doesn’t mean that everything has to go exactly as planned. Life changes! Instead, it means giving learners tools to better understand:
✨ What is happening now
✨ What is coming next
✨ What is expected of them
✨ How they can successfully move through a transition

Visual schedules, first/then language, transition warnings, consistent routines, timers, and showing rather than simply telling are all simple ways we can make transitions easier to understand.

And sometimes, the goal isn’t to make the transition disappear. It’s to make the transition easier to navigate. 🌱

At First Foundations ABA Services, we believe strong foundations create confidence—and predictability can be an important part of building that foundation. 💚

What is one strategy that helps your learner handle transitions more successfully? 👇

🪨 FOUNDATION FRIDAY:
What If Extinction Isn’t an Option?

In ABA, we often hear the word *extinction*—but what happens when extinction isn’t an option?

The answer: **we don’t stop supporting the learner. We get creative.**

Extinction isn’t appropriate for every behavior, every learner, or every situation. Some behaviors may involve safety concerns, medical needs, communication barriers, or circumstances where simply “not reinforcing” a behavior isn’t realistic.

Instead of asking:

❌ “How do we make this behavior stop?”

We can ask:

💡 **“What is this behavior communicating?”**
💡 **“What need is the learner trying to meet?”**
💡 **“What can we teach them to do instead?”**
💡 **“How can we change the environment to make success more likely?”**

Sometimes the most effective intervention isn't eliminating a behavior immediately—it's **teaching a safer, more functional replacement** while addressing the reason the behavior is happening in the first place.

Because at First Foundations ABA Service, we believe behavior has a reason.

**When extinction isn't an option, function-based intervention still is.** 🤍

🌱 **Strong behavior support starts with a strong foundation.**

🪨FOUNDATION FRIDAY | CHANGE THE ENVIRONMENT BEFORE THE BEHAVIOR

What if we stopped asking only, “How do we respond when the behavior happens?”

…and started asking:

“What can we change BEFORE it happens?”

Sometimes, a small change in the environment can make a big difference in a child’s ability to be successful.
For example, imagine a child who frequently becomes upset when it’s time to leave the playground.

Instead of waiting for the meltdown and then figuring out what to do, we can make changes before the transition:
✨ Give a 5-minute warning✨ Use a visual timer✨ Let the child choose which activity to do one last time✨ Teach them how to appropriately ask for “one more minute”✨ Tell them what they can do when they get home✨ Make the transition predictable

We haven't “given in.”

We've changed the environment to make success more likely.

This is an important part of ABA called antecedent manipulation—changing something that happens before a behavior in order to prevent challenging behavior or increase the likelihood of a more appropriate response.

And this doesn't mean we can prevent every challenging behavior.

It means we recognize that behavior doesn't happen in a vacuum.

The environment matters.

The expectations matter.

What happens immediately before the behavior matters.

And sometimes, the most effective intervention isn't waiting for the behavior to happen...

It's changing what happens BEFORE it does. 🌱

At First Foundations, we believe meaningful behavior change starts with understanding the whole picture—not just reacting to the behavior we see.

Strong foundations. Meaningful progress.

⛰️Foundation Friday: The Foundation of Reinforcement

Last week: Understanding the Why

Once we understand the why, we can use reinforcement intentionally to help build the skills we want to see more often.

👏🏻Reinforcement is not bribery.👏🏻

In ABA, reinforcement means that something happens after a behavior that increases the likelihood of that behavior happening again.

For example:
A child asks for a break appropriately → they get a break → they're more likely to ask appropriately next time.

A child attempts a difficult task → they receive encouragement or access to something meaningful → they're more likely to attempt it again.

A child uses functional communication instead of engaging in challenging behavior → their communication is honored → communication becomes more valuable.

The important piece is that reinforcement is individualized. What is reinforcing to one child may mean absolutely nothing to another.

When we understand the WHY behind behavior, we can choose reinforcement that actually matters to the child.

It's not about controlling children with rewards. It's about teaching meaningful skills, creating successful learning experiences, and making appropriate behavior worth repeating.

We don't use reinforcement to “buy” behavior.

We use it to build skills, strengthen communication, and help children experience success. That's the foundation. 🧱❤️

Myth vs. Fact: ABA at the Table

MYTH: ABA means sitting at a table doing drills all day.

FACT: ABA can happen anywhere learning naturally occurs. ❤️

Some of the most meaningful learning happens during play, everyday routines, conversations, community activities, and the things a child already loves.

Yes, table work can be one tool in ABA when it makes sense for the learner—but it’s not the definition of ABA.

At First Foundations, we believe therapy should be individualized, meaningful, and connected to real life. Our goal isn't simply to teach a child to complete a task during therapy. It's to help them build skills they can use at home, at school, in the community, and throughout life.

Because when we build the right foundation, learning can happen anywhere. 🧱💙

Foundation Friday. One Skill. Big Impact.

This week's foundation:
Why we focus on the WHY.

When a child is struggling, it can be easy to focus on what they are doing.

Crying.Hitting.Running away.Refusing.Throwing.

But in ABA, we don’t want to stop at the behavior.

We ask: WHY?

What is the child communicating? What happened right before the behavior? What might they be trying to gain, avoid, communicate, or regulate?

Because when we understand the function behind a behavior, we can teach a more effective and meaningful way to meet that same need.
💬 Maybe they need help communicating.🛑 Maybe something feels overwhelming.🤝 Maybe they need connection or support.🎯 Maybe they’ve learned that a certain behavior gets a predictable response.

The goal isn’t simply to make a behavior disappear.

The goal is to understand the child, teach meaningful skills, and build a better way forward.

That’s the foundation. Understand the why. Build from there.
