Cold and flu season always seems to sneak up sooner than we expect 🤒 Now is the time to check your medicine cabinet—and make sure you have the right thermometer.
One of the most common questions I get as a pediatrician: “Which thermometer should I use for my baby or toddler?”
Here’s my quick guide 🌡️
1️⃣ Re**al (Digital) – Most accurate for babies and young children, especially infants under 3 months.
2️⃣ Oral (Under the Tongue) – Best for kids 4+ who can hold it properly with their mouth closed.
3️⃣ Ear (Tympanic) – An option starting at 6 months. Correct positioning matters!
4️⃣ Forehead (Non-Touch) – Convenient for quick checks. Sweat, positioning, and room temperature can affect the reading, so follow your device’s instructions closely.
5️⃣ Armpit (Axillary) – Less accurate. Helpful for screening, but confirm a suspected fever with a more reliable method.
👶 Pediatrician tip: If your baby is under 3 months and has a re**al temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, call your pediatrician immediately—even if they otherwise seem well.
Save this before that middle-of-the-night fever hits. 💛
