I think a lot about lineage.
It connects us to what came before, helps us understand who we are today, and gives us the opportunity to create better for those who come after us.
I believe we chose our families before coming to Earth—to love, challenge, learn from, and grow with one another through this human experience.
I left Alabama almost 20 years ago, yet returning to my siblings and family always grounds me in a unique way. I’m grateful for all of it—the love and comfort, the lessons of what not to be, and the examples that inspire who I desire to be.
This past week, through extraordinary timing, I arrived in Alabama in time to spend my grandfather’s final day beside him.
He had barely moved all day. That evening, my grandmother came to kiss him goodnight. After 68 years of marriage and devotion, he found the strength to respond and kiss her back. A few hours later, he took his final breath.
It was difficult to witness, yet incredibly sacred.
While I remain Earthside determined to make my Papaw, Joe Ray Reese Sr., and my father, Joe Reese Jr., proud. I am grateful for the strength and example these men wove into my life.
Papaw lived a life of service— he taught us not to cut corners: do things right the first time. He gave hugs freely and made sure people knew they were loved.
So, in his honor, I’m committing to doing more of the same—to look people in the eyes and remind them:
“You are loved.”
May we allow that love to fill our cups until it overflows into our families, communities, work, and the world around us. There can never be too much goodness, beauty, Light, love, or service cultivated on this Earth.
The Reese family motto is Spes melioris aevi—“Hope of a better age.”
Papaw lived that hope through service and his commitment to leaving things better than he found them. Now it is ours to carry forward.
One chapter closes. Another begins.
I’m deeply grateful for the timing, the border crossings, the opportunity to be together, and every moment of love, laughter, and connection we shared. And thank you to everyone who has surrounded our family with condolences, prayers, love, and support.
You are loved. 🤍
