The PSA test is not the problem. What happens after the result comes back is where things go wrong.
Getting a PSA test is smart and I support it. What I do not support is letting a urologist interpret it without question. Before you accept a referral that puts you on a conveyor belt toward biopsy, pause and ask whether watchful monitoring over the next few months is a reasonable alternative.
Interpreting PSA results in context, over time, without invasive procedures, is exactly how the overdiagnosis cycle gets broken.
