Health & Wellness June: When Sharp Objects Strike at Home

Understanding Tendon Lacerations 🖐️✂️⚠️

Check out this brief summary of Dr. Sagini’s article from the June 2026 edition of Lee County Health and Wellness Magazine below!

What Is a Tendon Laceration?
A tendon laceration is a cut or tear to the fibrous cords that connect your muscles to your bones. These injuries often look minor at first, but beneath the skin, the damage can be serious. A severed or partially cut tendon can quietly rob you of hand or foot function for months, or even permanently, if not treated promptly.

Common Causes at Home
Kitchen knives, broken glass, box cutters, garden shears, and power tools are among the most frequent culprits. Summer months bring added risk with home improvement projects and yard work.

Why Timing Matters
Tendon repair is ideally performed within 12 to 24 hours of injury. The longer you wait, the more difficult the repair becomes. Delays can lead to permanent loss of motion, chronic pain, or the need for more complex reconstructive surgery.

Prevention Tips
A few simple steps can dramatically reduce your risk: cut-resistant gloves, sharp (not dull) blades, proper storage of sharp objects, and slowing down when you’re in a hurry.

Health & Wellness May: When a Broken Wrist Is More Than Just a Fall ✋🦴⚠️

Check out this brief summary of Dr. Sagini’s article from the May 2026 edition of Lee County Health and Wellness Magazine below!

What Is a Distal Radius Fracture?
A distal radius fracture (broken wrist) from a simple fall may be more than an isolated injury and can be an important warning sign of underlying osteoporosis. These fractures are among the most common orthopedic injuries and often occur when weakened bone cannot withstand normal force during a fall.

The Osteoporosis Connection
Osteoporosis is a “silent disease” that reduces bone density over time without symptoms until a fracture occurs. A low-energy wrist fracture is considered a fragility fracture and may indicate increased risk for future fractures, including more serious injuries such as hip fractures.

Why a Wrist Fracture Demands Action Beyond the Wrist
Dr. Sagini emphasizes that a wrist fracture should prompt evaluation for osteoporosis, including bone density testing and assessment for underlying causes. He also highlights the importance of addressing both the fracture and overall bone health through lifestyle measures and, when appropriate, medical treatment.

Treatment and Prevention:
A Two-Pronged Approach
Managing a distal radius fracture in the setting of osteoporosis requires treating both the acute injury and the underlying bone disease. Along with proper fracture alignment and healing, osteoporosis should be addressed through calcium and vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, fall prevention, and, when indicated, medications such as bisphosphonates or denosumab to reduce future fracture risk.

As Dr. Sagini emphasizes, coordination between orthopedic surgeons and other physicians, along with fracture liaison services, helps improve outcomes and reduce secondary fractures.
