As an OCD therapist, one of the most important things I want people to know is that not every thought deserves your attention.
The thoughts that upset us the most often latch onto the things we care about the most, our children, our relationships, our values, our future.
Because of that, those thoughts can feel incredibly important. Urgent, even.
But feeling important and deserving your attention are not the same thing.
A thought can be distressing without being meaningful.
A thought can be loud without being true.
A thought can show up without requiring you to solve it.
The goal isnât to eliminate unwanted thoughts or figure out exactly why they appeared.
The goal is to build a different relationship with them, one that allows you to make room for uncertainty while staying connected to what matters most.
