DECODING ABA: An Essential Guide

TERM: Stimulus control (SD)

A signal that helps guide behavior in the right setting.

Explanation: Stimulus control happens when a cue consistently tells a child which behavior is expected in a certain situation. Over time, these cues can help children understand routines, respond with confidence, and build more independence throughout the day.

For example, hearing “Clean up, please” may signal that it is time to place toys back where they belong. Consistent cues help make expectations easier to understand.

ABA MYTH vs. REALITY: A full 40-hour ABA therapy schedule is necessary for every child.

MYTH: Every child needs 40 hours of ABA therapy each week.

REALITY: ABA therapy is not based on a one-size-fits-all number.

Each child's plan considers their strengths, goals, support needs, age, daily routines, and family priorities.

The right amount of therapy is what best supports growth for that individual child.
