4 things your ADHDer wants you to know…but might not know how to tell you:
1. “I’m not trying to make things harder for you.”
When I forget my backpack, lose my shoes, interrupt you, or need the same reminder again… I know it can look like I don’t care. Sometimes I know exactly what I’m supposed to do and still struggle to make my brain DO it.
Please teach me skills that will help me with this, not assume the wrong motive.
2. “Time doesn’t feel the same to me.”
When you say, “We’re leaving in 10 minutes!” I may genuinely have trouble understanding how much I can accomplish in those 10 minutes.
So please help me see time through visual timers, countdowns, clocks, predictable routines, and warnings before transitions.
Don’t just tell me to “hurry up.” It actually stresses me out and isn’t helpful.
3. “My big reaction isn’t always about the little thing that just happened.”
The broken pencil. The wrong socks. My brother looking at me. You asking me to turn off the game. It might seem ridiculous that this is what sends me over the edge.
Sometimes that tiny frustration is simply the last thing my overwhelmed brain can handle.
Before correcting my behavior, help me regulate my body.
4. “I already know I mess up a lot.”
I realize I forgot the assignments. I hear the reminders. I see your frustration.
And sometimes I might say, “I don’t care” but what I actually want to say is, “I’m tired of feeling like I can’t get it right.”
Please notice what IS going right, too.
Catch me trying. Catch me improving. Catch me being kind. Catch me using a strategy without being reminded.
I don’t need you to lower the expectations for me. I need you to believe I’m capable while helping me build the skills to get there.
