Most people think core training is all about crunches and sit-ups. In reality, one of your core’s most important jobs is resisting unwanted movement. That’s exactly what suitcase holds, suitcase carries, and suitcase squats train.

These simple exercises build spinal stability, improve balance, strengthen your grip, and prepare your body for everyday tasks like carrying groceries, lifting your kids, and moving with confidence.

Try adding them to your routine and see the difference.

Most people treat neck pain by stretching the muscles that feel tight.

But your neck doesn’t work in isolation.

Your upper back, shoulder blades, shoulders, and deep neck muscles all work together. If one part of the system isn’t doing its job, your neck often has to compensate.

Instead of only treating the symptom, start addressing the entire movement system.

We’ve been taught there’s one “perfect” posture we’re supposed to hold all day.

The truth? Your body wasn’t designed to stay in one position—it was designed to move.

One of my favorite sayings is:

“The best posture is your next posture.”

Instead of obsessing over sitting perfectly, focus on changing positions, moving often, and trusting your body’s ability to adapt.

Recover. Restore. Reinforce.

If your upper or mid back feels stiff after a day at the computer, try this quick reset. 💻➡️🙌

These 4 mobility exercises help counteract hours of sitting by getting your thoracic spine and surrounding muscles moving again. It only takes about a minute, and your back will probably thank you.

💡 Save this for your next workday and share it with someone who’s always complaining about a stiff back!

Most of us have seen the posture chart with the perfectly straight line through the ear, shoulder, hip, and ankle. Or maybe you’ve heard that every inch your head moves forward adds more weight to your neck.

While there is some truth to the biomechanics, these ideas are often oversimplified and taken out of context.

Your body is strong, adaptable, and designed to move—not to hold one “perfect” posture all day.

Recover. Restore. Reinforce.

Jefferson curls might be the most controversial exercise on the internet… but controversy doesn’t automatically mean danger.

Your spine is designed to move—including into flexion. The real question isn’t “Is this exercise bad?” It’s “Is your body ready for it?”

When progressed gradually, Jefferson curls can improve mobility, strengthen your body through a full range of motion, and build confidence in movements that many people have been taught to fear.

Like any exercise, the dose matters.

This exercise isn’t for everyone. If it significantly increases your symptoms, your back may not be ready for it yet.

Would you try Jefferson curls, or do you avoid them?

Having trouble reaching behind your back to tuck in a shirt, fasten a bra, or scratch your back? This simple shoulder mobility progression helps improve the combination of motion needed for behind-the-back reaching, including internal rotation, extension, and shoulder mobility.

Start with the easiest variation and progress as your mobility improves. Consistent exposure to movement is often the key to restoring function and building long-term resilience.

Should you stop exercising if it hurts?

Not necessarily.

Pain is not always a sign of damage, but it’s also not something that should always be ignored. The key is learning the difference between productive discomfort and pain that signals you may need to modify what you’re doing.

In this video, I break down:
• Why pain doesn’t always equal tissue damage
• How avoiding movement can sometimes make things worse
• The traffic light system for exercising with pain
• How to tell if your symptoms are responding appropriately to exercise

For many people, the goal isn’t to avoid pain forever or push through severe pain. It’s to find the right starting point, gradually build tolerance, and regain confidence in movement.

Have you ever stopped an exercise because you weren’t sure if the pain was “good” or “bad”?

Back pain recovery is more than just stretching or resting.

At Active Independent Rehab, we use a simple 3-step framework:

✅ Recover – reduce pain and irritation
✅ Restore – improve mobility and movement control
✅ Reinforce – build strength so your back can handle life’s demands

Don’t stop rehab just because the pain is gone. That’s often where re-injury begins.

Think your hamstrings are tight? Stretching may not be the answer.

Instead of passively stretching, try strengthening your hamstrings through their full range of motion. Lengthening under load can improve flexibility, build strength, and create more lasting results than stretching alone.

Give exercises like Romanian deadlifts, single-leg RDLs, or hamstring sliders a try and see the difference.
