Behind the Scenes @ The Apothecary

A few of the herbal tools I use all the time…

My mortar and pestle, my coffee grinder, and of course my trusty teapot.

The mortar and pestle and grinder get plenty of use when I’m working with herbs, but the teapot?

That one gets used whether I’m working or not. 😂

Because being an herbalist isn’t always about making something. Sometimes it’s simply sitting down with a warm, delicious cup of tea and enjoying the plants I love.

Today is a day to recognize the people who show up, work hard, create, build, teach, care, and keep our communities moving.

I’m grateful for the work I get to do and for every person who supports small businesses like mine.

Product Feature of the Week: Sweet Belly Brew

Have you ever had one of those nights when your baby is fussy, uncomfortable, and you’re trying everything you can think of to help?

That’s part of why I created Sweet Belly Brew.

It’s a gentle herbal water prepared as a decoction and formulated specifically for infant use. It’s intended to provide gentle digestive support when little bellies are having a difficult time.

Sweet Belly Brew may be used to support:

• Occasional gas and digestive discomfort
• A more settled, comfortable tummy
• Gentle digestive support
• Those moments when baby just seems uncomfortable

Who is it for?

Sweet Belly Brew was created with parents of young babies in mind who want a simple herbal option to discuss with their baby’s healthcare provider.

How do you use it?

A small amount is prepared according to the directions provided with the product. Because babies are little and herbs can have real effects, I always encourage parents to talk with their baby’s healthcare provider before introducing an herbal preparation.

I made Sweet Belly Brew because sometimes you just want something gentle, thoughtfully prepared, and made with care.

International Day of Charity

I’ve been thinking about how charity doesn’t always look like giving money.

Sometimes it’s sharing what you know.
Sometimes it’s making something for someone who needs it.
Sometimes it’s checking on a neighbor, listening to a friend, or simply showing up.

For me, caring for people and sharing herbal knowledge has always been about community. We all have something we can give, even if it feels small.

And sometimes those small things are exactly what someone needs.

Not every plant in my garden ends up in a bottle, jar, or tea blend.

Some are just here because I love them.

I love walking through my garden, seeing what’s blooming, noticing the little changes, and enjoying the plants simply for what they are.

That’s honestly a big part of why I love herbs so much. Not everything has to have a purpose. Sometimes a flower can just make you smile.

And that love of plants is at the heart of Freya’s Herbals.

Q: Did you know enslaved African Americans preserved and passed down herbal knowledge despite the hardships of slavery?

A: Plants were an important part of everyday care when access to medical treatment was limited.

This knowledge was passed through families and communities, including the knowledge of healers, midwives, and root doctors.

Their herbal traditions drew from African knowledge, Indigenous plant knowledge, and experience with the plants growing around them.

Did you know?
Sassafras was one plant used in African American folk medicine and was traditionally prepared as a tea for things such as fevers and chills.
