This week, we joined UF Health in going purple to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing public understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.💜

We were grateful to have our incredible NaviGator students representing the Fixel Institute and sharing resources with patients, caregivers and community members interested in learning more about dementia, brain health and available support services.

In a retrospective study of 1,758 patients evaluated for DBS candidacy at the UF Norman Fixel Institute between 2009 and 2024, researchers examined why some patients were not approved for surgery.

The findings revealed that cognitive concerns were the leading reason patients were denied or delayed for DBS, followed by unrealistic expectations for surgery and psychiatric concerns. The results highlight the importance of comprehensive multidisciplinary evaluations in identifying patients most likely to benefit from DBS while minimizing potential risks.

A Fixel/UF case study highlights the challenges of treating essential tremor, a progressive movement disorder that can continue to worsen over time. After experiencing initial relief from MRI-guided focused ultrasound, a patient's tremor returned within a year and began affecting both hands.

Faced with a difficult treatment decision, the care team chose a different approach: deep brain stimulation (DBS). Following staged bilateral DBS surgery, the patient achieved significant tremor control on both sides.

This case underscores an important question in essential tremor care: what is the best path forward when symptoms return after focused ultrasound? While there is currently no clear consensus, the findings suggest that DBS may offer a durable and adjustable option for patients whose tremor recurs.

Now in college, she is helping build a community where others with Tourette’s can find support and connection.

Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month (May 15-June 15) serves as a reminder of the importance of awareness and understanding for those living with Tourette’s.

Fellowship Research Project Highlight!🌟

Senior Movement Disorders Fellow Dr. Anastasia Barnes recently published a study examining apathy in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and its impact on both patients and caregivers.

The study found that apathy is highly prevalent in DLB and is associated with greater cognitive impairment, anxiety, depression and reduced quality of life for both patients and caregivers. The findings highlight the importance of routinely screening for apathy in clinical care and research settings.
