What can genetic testing tell your family?

Genetic testing may help uncover a possible cause of hearing or balance conditions, provide insight into inheritance, and offer useful information for family members.

Every result is different, so speaking with a qualified healthcare professional or genetic counselor can help families better understand what their results mean and what steps may come next. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Hearing and balance perform different jobs, but both rely on important structures located inside the inner ear.

The cochlea supports hearing, while the nearby vestibular system detects movement and changes in position. The brain combines this information with signals from the eyes, muscles, and joints to help maintain balance.

Because these systems are closely connected, some inner-ear conditions, including certain genetic conditions, may affect both. However, hearing loss does not automatically mean someone will experience balance difficulties.

A new chapter for families living with genetic hearing loss.

This year, the first gene therapy for a genetic form of hearing loss received FDA approval, a milestone that many families have waited decades to see. 💙

While this treatment is specific to one genetic condition, its impact reaches much further. It shows that hearing restoration is no longer just a future possibility, it is becoming reality.

For families affected by genetic hearing loss, including conditions involving STRC, MYO7A, TMPRSS3, LOXHD1, and many others, this moment brings something powerful:

Hope.

At Rescue Hearing Inc., we remain committed to helping families stay informed, connected, and prepared for the scientific advances ahead.

👂 Types of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss isn’t the same for everyone.
It can affect different parts of the ear and understanding the type is the first step toward the right care.

• Conductive : sound is blocked from reaching the inner ear
• Sensorineural : damage to the inner ear or nerve
• Mixed : a combination of both

Early detection makes a difference. 💙

You’re not hearing wrong - you’re hearing less.

If conversations feel unclear or people seem to mumble, it might not be them. It could be your hearing.

Early signs are easy to miss - but they matter. 💙

👂 Hearing is teamwork.

Your brain relies on input from both ears to locate sound, understand speech clearly, and maintain balance.

This is called binaural hearing and it plays a major role in how we experience the world around us. 💙
