This picture is a mixture of frustration, empathy, and deep concern for our city.
I recently viewed the “Civic Justice League” image and the related social media posts surrounding MD Health Pathways. While I understand that civic engagement often comes with strong opinions and passionate advocacy, the tone and portrayal in those posts do not reflect what many of us understand a hero to be.
Someone who rises to a challenge with noble qualities, integrity and selflessness for the common good. Fundamentally, a hero faces adversity with bravery, humility, and respect for others even those who DISAGREE. Heroes do not silence opposing voices, diminish others, OR empower division.
What has unfolded on social media does not resemble courage. It resembles modern day bullying. It reflects division in a city that is beautifully diverse and deserves unity.
From the very beginning of MD Health Pathways in March 2025, I believed the matter should have gone to the voters. I have consistently said that. However, the council chose to move forward in the way they saw fit, and I do believe that they thought they were doing something great for our city. I heard both sides and remained neutral. I have never imposed my personal views on anyone. My position has always been simple: whether in or out, make the best informed decision for YOUR family.
What troubles me is that this was never framed as a balanced civic discussion. It became about volume over voice, bullhorns over balance. Individuals who expressed different views were often made to feel lesser, dismissed, or labeled negatively simply because they did not share the same stance. That is not advocacy. That is not leadership. That is not HEROISM.
I have witnessed uncouth behavior in my lifetime, but rarely among individuals who present themselves as the voice of the people. “Your city. Your voice.” but whose city? Whose voice? Many voices were afraid to speak publicly and anticipated a vote to feel represented. Those voices matter too.
True heroes pay attention consistently not only when they feel personally threatened. They act because there is need, not because there is pressure. They serve quietly and consistently, not selectively.
Garland is made up of many nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds. It is ONE city with many voices. When leadership appears homogeneous and dismissive of differing perspectives, it reinforces division instead of strengthening community. Our city cannot function as a community without UNITY.
Hope Clinic has served Garland for 25 years and none of our new heroes ever paid attention to them until they felt threatened. Many of us have served this city quietly and continue to give what we have because the needs are real. Services like this matter to families who may not have the privilege others enjoy. When our newly empowered civic heroes’ actions center more on control than compassion, it loses sight of the people they claim to protect.
I sincerely hope that lessons were learned through this challenge. I hope greater attention is paid to all agendas moving forward and not only when personal interests feel affected. I hope we become more involved, more informed, and more inclusive.
Garland deserves leaders who build bridges, not divide neighborhoods, dialogue, not dominance, unity, equality, and respect for EVERY voice.
Let us move forward with humility, integrity, and love for our neighbors and NOT just for those who agree with us. Be your own voice, YOU MATTER TOO!
