The armour was earned. Something happened, you built it, and it worked.
The difficulty is that armour which once kept you from being hurt
is now the reason you're not being held.
It's doing the very thing you built it to prevent.

This stage asks almost nothing.
When a wave rises, don't push it down quite so fast.
One hand on your chest.
One extra breath.

Somewhere you learned that being reliable was the same thing as being loved. So you said yes .... hundreds of times, often when you meant no.

The anger that arrives late and out of proportion isn't out of proportion. It's the interest on every yes you didn't mean.

This stage asks something small: let one sentence end where it ends, without softening it. Then notice what rises.

This might look like:
— You look up the flight, the course, the house — and close the tab.
— Photographs of yourself from fifteen years ago feel like someone else.
— You're irritable about things that never used to register.
— You've started noticing what you'd wear or eat or play if no one were watching.

Restlessness at this stage gets diagnosed as ingratitude — usually by the woman having it. It isn't. It's information.

And the envy that catches you off guard, at lives you wouldn't even want? That's the cleanest map you'll ever get. It points, with no manners at all, at what you've refused yourself.
