With so much tragedy occurring around us, it is so important to recognize the need to focus on self-care. For those of us who are sensitive to how others are hurting, we may find it difficult to not take on the grief of the family, friends and loved-ones of the those who passed away. Recognizing the impact of these overwhelming feelings; such as sadness, anxiety, fear, and even anger, and the toll it can take on us emotionally, physically, and spiritually is vital to our processing tbe loss. How we relate to the significant loss; ie.. as a widow, a child who lost a parent, as a parent who lost a child or even the passing of a dear friend may be a reminder of our own loss and affect our grief journey. Take time to honor your thoughts and feelings, grieve with grace and love then find a way to see hope in tomorrow ♥️🙏🏻

Recently I read an article that resonated with similar sayings we have all heard before..."Tis a fearful thing / to love what death can touch." This line begins a poem written more than a thousand years ago, by the Jewish poet Judah Halevi. The articke went on to share what his thoughts were behind the fear: "to love .../ And oh, to lose."

Our very existence is rooted in love; even God knew he would experience loss and still created us. Scripture speaks very clearly about supporting those who are grieving and how special they are to God.

Grief can isolating but the journey is not deaigned to be taken alone, allow others to help you. We are all grieving a loss(es) and wear the scars differently.

Psalms 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. 🙏🏻

As each day unfolds, we are reminded of a loved one who is no longer with us. These reminders can take many forms, such as a song, smell, color, food, etc., and may arise at unexpected times or when we feel emotionally vulnerable. It is vital to take a moment to reflect on these memories, allow yourself to experience the emotions that emerge, and honor the love that you once shared.

Following the loss of a loved-one, concerns or fears may arise that memories of them will gradually fade. Consider creating a personalized photo album with pictures of those special moments and record those memories. Sharing the album with friends and family will help keep those cherished moments alive.

When our loved-one passes away the memories of them may seem dream-like; suddenly we are living a life that is unrecognizable. Although the pain of today takes time to soften; the cherished memories will find a way to be a part of tomorrow. Be kind and patient with yourself. Grieving with Grace and Love 🙏🏻

Grieving is exhausting, Consider making self-care a priority daily when thinking about a New Year’s resolution. Ideas of what that might be: listening to favorite music, reading, going for a walk, quiet time to pray or meditate, etc… Most importantly think of a Blessing you have. A Widow told me she counts waking up each day a blessing, as it is something her husband does not get to do so she tries to make the most of each day ♥️

“This is a group that I don’t want to belong to”, was the most honest and candid statement shared by a bereaved during a grief support group meeting. Grieving the loss of a loved one, a marriage, a friendship, a job, loss of innocence as a child, etc…is “Your greatest loss” and cannot be compared to anyone else’s. The one aspect we all have in common is being human, with pain and suffering that cannot be escaped. We all have scars that no one else can see.

Each day getting out of bed may be all that we can commit to; Make your bed and reward yourself for that effort!!!

As the season is changing and the Holidays are near; we may find ourselves experiencing feelings of anxiety, sadness, headaches, body aches or even increased irritability, and not knowing why. Our mind and body may be responding to the awareness or reminder that our loved-one will not be present for the holidays. This passing may be recent or even years ago and still impact us through a physical and/or emotional response. Practicing self-care during this time is extremely important. Find time to pause, remember and honor all that you are feeling. Most of all, be patient and kind to yourself and others who may be grieving; this allows us to love and find hope in tomorrow ♥️

As a social worker for 25 years, I’ve had a passion to care for those with a terminal illness. The past 13 years has been directly working with hospice patients as a liaison, social worker and bereavement counselor. I’ve been blessed to be a part of the end of life journey for many patients; provided the patient and family members with anticipatory grief support, and then the honor of being at bedside as they passed away.

Personally I have experienced a great deal of loss since a young age and professionally the loss of each patient I cared for has impacted my own grief journey. Everyone experiences loss and traveling the journey together reminds us we are not alone!
