🎶 Joyful Hearts Choir: Making the Most of the Late Afternoon! 💕

The hours before dinner can sometimes be difficult for people living with dementia. As the day winds down, some experience increased confusion, restlessness, or anxiety, often called sundowning.

That’s one of the reasons we intentionally scheduled our Joyful Hearts Choir later in the day.

Our hope is to make this time of day a little easier by bringing people together through familiar music, laughter, connection, and a sense of belonging.

We’re also paying close attention to how the choir impacts our participants, not just during rehearsal, but afterward. Are they more relaxed? Are they in good spirits heading into dinner? Does the music stay with them?

And one of my favorite things to listen for is humming! 🎵

When someone continues humming a song after rehearsal, it can be a wonderful little sign that the music is still with them.

We’re excited to see how this program develops and what we learn along the way.

We strive to not just fill an hour, but make it meaningful. ❤️

✨ A little jar filled with a whole lot of JOY! ✨

We’ve been putting together our new Joy Jars for Abundant Days! At the end of some of our programs, participants will get to reach into the jar and randomly choose a little rolled-up message: each one holding an uplifting saying, encouraging thought, or reminder of just how special they are. 💛

You never know which one you’ll pick…maybe it will be exactly the message you needed that day. 🥰

And of course, our littlest Day Maker has been hard at work helping us roll up all those tiny pieces of joy and get the jars ready! 🌈

🍂The Harvest 🍂
In the harvest field, I see pumpkins, gourdes, a cornucopia.
The autumn sky above is pink, then orange, dark blue, and shining.
I hear the sound of leaves crunching, birds singing, and wind blowing.
The harvest season makes me feel cool and as something new is coming.
And from the seeds of my life, I ponder to myself that I have grown light, love, children, and friends around me. 🍂

🎨🍋 Art, connection, and creativity!

Yesterday, we were so excited to welcome a VCU Art Education major who is interning with Abundant Days! She joined us for Abundant Art at Spring Arbor Cottage of Salisbury, where we spent the morning creating our beautiful lemon trinket trays.

We love being able to give future educators hands-on experience working with older adults while our participants get to enjoy the creativity they bring!

The lemon 🍋trays turned out pretty sweet! 💛🎨

🎶 We are excited to announce the beginning of the Abundant Days Joyful Hearts Choir! 🎶

With guidance from Joy Weaver—Music Director at River Road United Methodist Church and Saint Gertrude High School—we are beginning rehearsals for this holiday season!

Joy has also graciously donated our choir folders and robes, will be recording our piano accompaniment, and will join us as a guest director for a rehearsal. We are so grateful for her generosity and musical guidance!

Over the next three months, our choir members will select songs, practice vocal warm-ups, explore the history behind the music, and—of course—experience the joy of singing together!

There is still time for additional senior living communities to join the Joyful Hearts Choir this season. If your community is interested, please reach out to us at [email protected].

We cannot wait to lift our voices, share the joy of music, and make this holiday season truly special. ! ❤️🎶
