ā€œI Want to Go Homeā€ in Alzheimer’s: 3 Kind Ways to Respond

When a loved one with Alzheimer’s says ā€œI want to go home,ā€ they may be feeling scared, anxious, or in need of comfort ā¤ļø — not necessarily wanting a physical place.

✨ 1. Reassure and Comfort
Stay calm, speak gently, and offer soothing touch or a comforting item like a blanket or stuffed animal.

🧠 2. Avoid Reasoning
Logic and explanations can increase frustration. Focus on empathy instead of correcting them.

🌼 3. Validate and Redirect
Agree softly — ā€œOkay, we’ll go soon.ā€ Then redirect their attention to something pleasant like a snack, a walk, or a favorite activity.

Small, compassionate responses can help your loved one feel safe and understood. šŸ’™

Christmas in July at Reunion Rehabilitation Hospital Peoria was such a fun event! šŸŽ„ā˜€ļø

It was great to tour Reunion of Peoria again—it had been a while since my last visit, and I was really impressed. The rehab facility is beautiful, clean, and welcoming, with an incredible team that brings so much energy and positivity to the environment.

Great conversations, a wonderful tour, and yes... margaritas made the event even more enjoyable! šŸ¹ Thank you to the Reunion team for the warm hospitality. Looking forward to staying connected!

If you or a loved one need help navigating senior living options, I'm here to help.
