State land claims and cessions to the federal government (1782–1802)

πŸ“œ How early America shaped its national territory (1782–1802)

After the American Revolution, several original states claimed large western territories. Between 1782 and 1802, these states gradually ceded their land claims to the federal government, helping form the public lands that later became new states.

For example:
β€’ New York ceded western lands in 1782
β€’ Virginia ceded territory in 1784
β€’ North Carolina ceded land that became Tennessee
β€’ Georgia ceded land that later formed Alabama and Mississippi

These agreements helped create a unified national territory and paved the way for the expansion of the United States westward. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
