Hello everyone, hope you’re all doing well!
I wanted to share a quick update for those of you taking GLP-1 medications. It’s important not only to stay focused on the lifestyle changes we discussed during your initial consult but also to prioritize preserving muscle mass while using these medications.
We are not affiliated with any pharmacy and don't sell medications. We only prescribe. That being said, we wanted to let you know that the compounding pharmacy now offers tirzepatide tablets. Additionally, for those on Medicare, GLP-1 medications may be covered if you have Medicare Part D and meet certain BMI requirements or have specific comorbidity risk factors.
There was some confusion about an email sent out a week or two ago regarding labs for those on these meds. It’s crucial to keep everything monitored to ensure your body is responding well. Labs from your P*P are perfectly fine; we just need to make sure they’re done every six to twelve months.
Many people get excited about rapid weight loss, which is great, but it’s easy to overlook that you might be losing muscle mass along with fat. GLP-1 medications may not always send the right signals to your brain, leading to loss of both fat and muscle.
Here are some key points to help preserve your muscle mass while on GLP-1 medications:
- Protein intake: As we discussed during your consultation, getting enough protein is essential. Aim for about 0.5 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day. Women generally benefit from the lower end of that range, men from the higher. Protein provides amino acids—the building blocks your body needs to maintain and build muscle—and supports brain health.
- Strength training: You don’t need to be a bodybuilder, but your muscles need regular challenge. Whether it’s weight machines, free weights, resistance bands, lunges, squats, or leg presses, resistance training signals your brain and body to preserve muscle tissue. Aim for 30 to 45 minutes of strength training two to three times per week.
- Hormone balance: For those on testosterone or hormone replacement therapy, hormones play a major role in maintaining and growing muscle. Proper hormone balance helps your body send the right signals to keep lean muscle mass. Building muscle can be a bit more challenging while on GLP-1 meds, so having optimized hormone levels can really help. Testosterone and other hormones are important for body composition in both men and women.
We will share more soon, but these are the key things to focus on right now. Keep up the great work, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions!
Take care, and have a safe and happy 4th of July.
