This particular way of doing Upward Dog will enhance your backbends by strengthening your

1. Posterior (back side) shoulder muscles
2. Erector Spinae (back muscles that create backbends).

Honestly, You won’t really get much from watching this video! It’s informative but the body needs sequential progressions that train new patterns in your neuromuscular system.

Every class is designed to do exactly that. The sequences are crafted to cultivate new patterns and improve your functionality often resulting in greater access to postures but more importantly feeling and moving better on and off the mat.

Are you a yoga teacher and want to enhance your sequencing skills, infuse bio-mechanics into your classes, and help your students advance their physical skillsets?👇

What qualifies an adjustment as “Functional”?

Functional Adjustment is one that educates a student on how to engage a muscle and/or articulate a joint action.

👉In this case the Functional focus is on getting teacher to increase the engagement of her Hip Flexors against the tension of her hamstrings.

3 Indications that A Physical Adjustments did NOT improve Functionality

1. Teacher had to stay the whole time - student didn’t create the new action, the teacher did.

2. Student can’t replicate the new action, alignment, or engagement on their own later or the next day.

3. Student doesn’t understand, no revelation, no Aha, no intellectual or physical development.

Join the revolution of physical adjustments/assists in yoga, it’s called Functional Adjustments.

The first training takes place July 13-15th - details in bio

Functional Adjustments: a new paradigm for the way we utilize “hands on” in yoga.

In direct alignment with , Functional Adjustments aims to Educate the student on how to use their body instead of simply improving flexibility or accessing a pose.

The guiding factor is that a functional adjustment requires a students’ participation - stimulating their neuromuscular response and cultivating joint articulations, instead of the teacher simply pulling them into position.

Flip the Grip for King Pigeon?

As someone who has dislocated his shoulder I am hyper aware of when my shoulder is in a compromised position.

🛠️That said you can easily avoid that type of risk by:

1. Keep your elbow tight to your ribs while rotating
2. Maintain a deep thoracic backbend allowing the shoulder blade to rotate easily to reduce stress on the shoulder joint.

Tip: keeping your hips lifted will reduce the stretch of Psoas major allowing you to transfer the backbend to the upper back which is key for the shoulder rotation.

As a smaller guy (5’ 6” 145lbs) I can rarely rely on strength to support students. Instead I utilize techniques like weight shifting, bone stacking, Triangulation, contrast forces, etc. In order to provide a safe space for both my students and myself.

I learned how to do this as an Acrobat, often lifting and/or spotting people that were much taller and stronger than I am. The principals of acrobatics is basically just Engineering for the human body. We can accomplish the impossible with the correct angles.
