Finding the Right Balance: Support vs. Independence in Pediatric Bracing Device Choice
When supporting a child’s mobility, one of the most critical decisions we make is finding the balance between support and active progress.
Recently, a family came in with a common question: Should we switch to a taller, more supportive brace, or stick with SMOs to encourage independent strength building?
Here’s the core question we consider when choosing orthotics:
Is the movement causing a significant problem? If a child is struggling significantly and needs stability to function, providing a supportive brace is essential.
Is it a challenge they can work through? If the movement is a minor struggle that therapy can improve, restricting that motion might prevent them from building natural strength and control.
Bracing should assist, not restrict potential. Every child’s journey is different, and as they grow and progress in physical therapy, their orthotic needs will evolve, too.
How do you approach decisions around bracing and therapy goals with your team? Let’s discuss below! 👇
