Food Allergy Nursing Association - FANA Empowering nurses to be informed on food allergy.

06/15/2026

FANA was honored to participate in the 9th Annual FAST Meeting, where leaders from across the country and the United Kingdom gathered to advance best practices in food allergy care. We were proud to highlight the essential role of food allergy nursing within a program focused on clinical innovation, collaboration, and patient safety, with contributions from our founder and CEO, Olga Kagan, PhD, RN, and James Gardner on the growing impact of food allergy nursing and the work of FANA.

Their session and the expert Q&A emphasized the importance of strong partnerships that support patients and families.

We appreciate FAST leadership, FANA members in attendance, and all who have been contributing to the continued advancement of the future of food allergy care.

There is more than one option for epinephrine delivery on the market. From EpiPen®, Adrenaclick, Teva® Auto‑Injector, Auvi‑Q®, Jext®, Symjepi®,and the needle‑free Neffy® (nasal spray), patients may be prescribed different devices, each with its own steps, design, and dosing options.

Nurses and nurse practitioners play a critical role in ensuring patients know how to use the specific device they are prescribed, verifying that the device is covered by their insurance, and confirming that the prescribed dose remains appropriate as the patient grows and their weight changes.
Empowering patients with confidence and clarity in their epinephrine device is a cornerstone of safe, effective anaphylaxis preparedness.

A recent Gallup report found that 1 in 4 Americans are using AI for health information, often before or after a healthcare visit.
In food allergy care, this is already showing up in practice.
Patients and families are using AI to ask about symptoms, ingredients, and next steps after a reaction. That information can be helpful, but it is not always complete or accurate.
This is where nurses and other licensed healthcare professionals play an important role.
Nurses help patients interpret what they are seeing and hearing. They reinforce when to use epinephrine, when to seek care, and how to manage day to day decisions more safely. They also help correct misinformation and put guidance into context.
As more patients come in with outside information, nursing care becomes even more focused on practical education, clarification, and support.
AI can be a useful tool, but it works best when paired with clinical guidance.
