and I got out this afternoon and used our fitness by going on a ruck. We stayed pretty active and regular during "quaratine" but it was nice to get out and not get dirty looks for living our lives.

Alright, team it’s time to take a big, deep breath.

Yes, the coronavirus is spreading, but let’s put things in perspective for a minute.

So far this winter season, there have been at least 34 million cases of influenza detected and 20,000 deaths in the US. That is an enormous amount of suffering and death when compared to the 647 cases and 25 deaths thus far from COVID-19.

Comparing this outbreak to chronic disease also helps to shed some light on the magnitude of the problem. Currently about 121 million people in the US have cardiovascular disease, and 859,000 people die each year of heart disease and stroke. Although these diseases affect a huge proportion of our population and result in 1/3 of all deaths, they don’t seem to raise the same level of concern as the general public currently has over COVID-19 likely because they are so slow to develop over years and decades.

So, let’s practice basic respiratory infection precautions and each do our part to stay informed so we can work together to prevent COVID-19 from becoming a global problem.

But let’s also use this outbreak as a reminder that if we bring this same level of concern to flu season every year and the more insidious epidemic of chronic disease, perhaps we can prevent more pain and suffering in the long run.
