I'm a psychologist and an award-winning author. I also speak and present at conferences, book clubs, libraries, and community organizations. My upcoming historical fiction novel, All the Broken Angels, co-written with Steve Hardiman, will launch on October 5th, 2024. Join us for this story of a young woman coming of age as the women's movement came to age in the 1960s and while the country was at

war with itself. The book is a Finalist for the Royal Palm Literary Award by the Florida Writer's Association. My first book, The Crystal Beads, Lalka's Journey, is about a hidden child of the Holocaust. The story was turned into a stage presentation with the help of women from the National League of American Pen Women. My short stories and poetry have been published in the Emerald Coast Review Red Penguin Press, Panoplyzine, a literary Zine, The Pen Women Journal, Dewdrop, and Mused Literary Journal. As a psychologist, I worked for the Veterans Administration and specialized in working with Vietnam veterans. I was also the coordinator of the LGBTQ+ veterans organization. In the theater world, I worked as a director, producer, and playwright in New York and New England. While in Maine, I produced and directed a summer stock theater company and a murder mystery dinner theater.

Welcome to the 1960s & early 70s. It was a divided country--a time of war, peace protests, the flower-power counterculture, the women's movement, and the birth of gay pride rights.

In All the Broken Angels, meet Chris and Ernesto, two gay men trying to be accepted into a world that didn't readily accept them. Chris is disowned by his religious family, and Ernesto joins the military, serving in silence. It was okay to make war but not love.

Some time ago, I worked as an LGBTQ coordinator for the Veterans Administration and had the opportunity to work with brave men and women who served at that time. This is the month to honor them for their service.

What a great time spent with authors and at . And many thanks to Laura Toton, Library Director, for this opportunity.
We were all happy to share our books with readers and other authors. And, I was also able to share my book jewelry.

Route 66 celebrates its Centennial anniversary this year. Last year, we traveled part of Arizona's Route 66.

Route 66, also known as the "Mother Road," is a historic highway stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica, California. John Steinbeck coined the term in his novel, “The Grapes of Wrath.” The road provided a path for migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl and searching for a better life in California.

Interstate 40 replaced most of the road when the U.S. highway system was modernized in the 1980s. However, sections of the original Route 66 still exist and are designated as Historic Route 66. In places like Seligman, you can still drive on portions of the original road.

Happy Mother's Day!

I only have a few pictures of my mother, my grandmother, and myself. This one goes way back. I miss them both so much. But I'll always have the memories of the two women who shaped who I have become. Love you, Mom and Grandma.

As a psychologist, I had the opportunity to work with veterans who struggled with PTSD. This medical disorder did not yet exist when our men and women returned from Vietnam. When they initially sought treatment, they were told to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” and continue on with their lives. However, given that so many struggled with severe psychological distress upon returning home, extensive research was conducted. The result of this research was a diagnosis of PTSD, which was included in the DSM-III (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) in 1980. This marked a significant shift in the psychiatric community’s understanding of PTSD as a condition caused by external trauma rather than an inherent individual weakness.
Before the Vietnam War, doctors often diagnosed veterans exhibiting PTSD-like symptoms under different terms. Some of these included:
• "Soldier’s Heart" – A term used after the Civil War, describing symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, anxiety, and difficulty breathing.
• "Shell Shock" – Commonly used during World War I, this term suggested that exposure to artillery explosions caused neurological damage.
• "Combat Fatigue" or "Battle Fatigue" – Used during World War II, this term described exhaustion and psychological distress resulting from prolonged combat. “Shell Shock” was still occasionally used during this time.
As well as war-related symptoms, the Vietnam veterans I spoke to also shared stories of the treatment they received once they returned home. Lack of understanding of their mental health issues was one issue. But there were many others. The Vietnam War was highly controversial, and many Americans opposed it. Some civilians unfairly blamed soldiers for the war itself. Veterans told me this treatment often exacerbated their PTSD symptoms.
The experiences of Vietnam veterans paved the way for a better understanding and treatment of veterans following this era.
