⚠️ Community Safety Reminder ⚠️

With water levels at Rough River Lake being lower than normal this year, items that have been hidden underwater for months or even years may become exposed along shorelines and recreational areas, including discarded syringes and other sharp objects.

To help keep our community safe, Breckinridge County Harm Reduction offers a Needle Pick-Up Program to safely collect and properly dispose of used syringes found in public areas.

If you find a syringe:
• Do NOT pick it up with bare hands
• Keep children and pets away from the area
• Do NOT attempt to break or recap the needle
• Contact BCHRP for safe disposal assistance

Our goal is to protect our community, reduce accidental needle stick injuries, and keep public spaces safe for everyone.

Remember: Harm reduction helps protect everyone.

For National Prevention Week 2026, we’re focusing on breaking down stigma around substance use and mental health, because recovery and healing start with understanding, not judgment.

Substance use and mental health challenges are health conditions, not character flaws. When we treat them as such, we create space for people to seek help earlier, stay connected to care, and feel supported in their recovery journey. Stigma, on the other hand, can delay treatment, deepen isolation, and make recovery harder than it needs to be.

This week is a reminder that prevention isn’t just about stopping substance use before it starts, it’s also about building communities where people feel safe talking openly about struggles, accessing support, and knowing they are not alone.

Together, we can shift the conversation from shame to support. Listen without judgment. Speak with compassion. Encourage help-seeking. Small actions can make a real difference.

Did you know? Teens are more likely to get prescription drugs from a home medicine cabinet than off the street. Many young people who misuse prescription medications report getting them from friends or family members, often without permission.

In Kentucky, an estimated 2.01% of youth ages 12–17 reported misusing pain relievers in the past year, and thousands of Kentucky teens report past-month drug use each year. Preventing access at home is one of the most important ways we can protect our youth.

One simple step can make a big difference:
• Store medications in a secure medication lock bag or locked cabinet
• Keep track of prescriptions and pill counts
• Properly dispose of unused medications
• Have open conversations with teens about prescription drug misuse

Medication lock bags help prevent access, misuse, and theft by keeping prescriptions safely secured at home.

BCHRP has FREE medication lock bags available to help families safely store medications and reduce youth access to prescription drugs. BCHRP also has Deterra Drug Deactivation kits to help properly dispose of medications. Contact us or stop by to pick supplies up!

Prevention starts at home. Together, we can keep our youth safe and healthy.

During National Prevention Week 2026, we’re highlighting the importance of healthy coping skills and positive mental wellness.

Life can be stressful, but healthy ways of coping—like talking to someone you trust, exercising, journaling, spending time outdoors, practicing mindfulness, or connecting with supportive friends and family—can make a lasting difference.

Building healthy coping skills helps prevent substance misuse, strengthens resilience, and supports overall well-being for individuals of all ages.

This week, challenge yourself to check in on your mental health and encourage others to choose healthy ways to manage stress. Together, we can create stronger, healthier communities.

During National Prevention Week 2026, we recognize the important role families, schools, and communities play in helping youth grow into healthy, resilient individuals. Prevention starts with connection; listening without judgment, creating safe spaces for conversation, and supporting positive choices every day.

You can support youth by:
• Encouraging open conversations about mental health and substance use
• Promoting healthy activities and peer connections
• Recognizing signs of stress and offering support early
• Sharing prevention resources and community programs
• Being a positive role model and trusted adult

When communities come together, prevention works. Every conversation, every act of support, and every opportunity for connection can make a lasting difference in the lives of young people and their families.

Prevention starts with community, connection, and education. This week, we come together to raise awareness about substance misuse prevention, mental health support, and building healthier futures for individuals and families across our communities.

Every conversation matters. Every resource helps. Every positive choice makes a difference.

Throughout the week, we encourage everyone to:
• Learn about prevention resources
• Support youth and families
• Promote healthy coping skills
• Help reduce stigma surrounding substance use and mental health challenges

Together, we can create safer, healthier, and stronger communities for all.

Today marks 6 weeks since the installation of our Harm Reduction Vending Machine, and the impact is already clear.

In just 6 weeks, the machine has distributed:
• 47 boxes of Narcan
• 168 fentanyl test strips
• 72 xylazine test strips
• 280 condoms
• 15 hygiene kits
• 11 feminine hygiene packs
• 14 flu/COVID tests
• 10 Deterra drug deactivation kits

This is what harm reduction looks like in action - meeting people where they are, saving lives, and improving community health.

We are incredibly grateful for the support Breckinridge County has shown this program from day one. Together, we are working to break stigma, expand access to lifesaving resources, and create a healthier future for all residents.

🚨 Breckinridge County Alert 🚨

In 2025, we had overdose deaths in Breckinridge County which were the result of methamphetamine being mixed with fentanyl. This is a combination many people do not expect and often cannot detect.

Just because it’s not an opioid doesn’t mean it’s safe. Fentanyl is showing up in substances where people aren’t looking for it and that’s costing lives.

Fentanyl test strips are a simple, effective tool that can help detect fentanyl before use and reduce the risk of overdose.

📍 You can access FREE fentanyl test strips right here in our community:
• 24/7 access vending machine at the Breckinridge County Health Department
• Harm Reduction Station in Cloverport under the pavilion at the Festival Building
