A diagnosis can give a name to symptoms, help connect issues that once seemed unrelated, and provide a clearer understanding of what is happening in the body. It may also help guide accommodations and symptom management ❤️‍🩹

Save this reminder, and share it with someone who needs to understand why diagnosis can matter.

Follow for clear, research-based posts on hEDS, HSD, POTS, MCAS, ADHD, and autism ❤️‍🩹

Every few years I share an updated version of the original Neurodivergent Umbrella graphic as a reminder that:

• Neurodivergent includes far more than just autism and ADHD.

• Neurodivergent is a socio-political term that refers to anyone whose functioning diverges from neuronormativity.

• Neurodivergent is not a medical or clinical term.

• Neurodivergent has always been an inclusive term that includes mental health conditions, neurological conditions, neurodevelopmental conditions and any significant ways of diverging from neuronormativity even if it doesn’t fall under a diagnosis.

When I created the very first neurodivergent umbrella graphic many years ago, I meant for it, not to be a defining list of diagnoses that count as neurodivergent, but as a way to encourage inclusion and broader conversations about neurodivergence and the many ways that people can diverge from neuronormativity.

That’s why, in this new version, I’ve added “anyone who significantly diverges from neuronormativity” at the bottom.

What if the hardest parts of autism were the ones no one else could see? What if people understood that struggling internally does not always look like struggling externally?

Many autistic experiences are invisible.

Sometimes they look like this:

🎈 Living with physical discomfort or pain even when there is no obvious injury or illness

🎈 Struggling to process spoken instructions quickly, especially when there is a lot of information at once

🎈 Masking your needs to appear "fine," "easygoing," or less autistic

🎈 Knowing exactly what needs to be done but feeling unable to start the task

🎈 Experiencing an internal shutdown while appearing calm or quiet on the outside

🎈 Needing significant recovery time after work, school, errands, or everyday activities

🎈 Relying on rehearsed scripts to navigate spontaneous conversations

🎈 Feeling mentally exhausted after social interactions that others consider simple

🎈 Constantly analyzing your tone, other people's words, facial expressions, and unspoken social expectations

These are not character flaws, laziness, or a lack of effort. They are often the result of navigating a world that does not always accommodate autistic ways of processing, communicating, and experiencing the environment.

For many autistic individuals, these invisible struggles are dismissed because they are happening beneath the surface. But appearing calm or capable does not mean something is not taking significant effort.

At Blue Sky Learning, our neurodiversity-affirming therapists and coaches understand the hidden challenges of autism. We provide compassionate, individualized support that honours your experiences without expecting you to mask who you are.

People with chronic illnesses need validation of our illness and our limits.

We have been gaslit and traumatized into living from a faux window of tolerance.

We don't need tools that help us override, minimize, or push through our experience.

Practicing honoring our current capacity is the foundation for recovery. Our capacity can only grow in the future if we take care of ourselves based on where we are right now instead of where we want to be.

🦎I'm hosting a set of workshops on ND Chronic Illness July 13 & 15 at 3pm EST. We’ll be learning about the biomechanism behind most chronic illnesses, why the medical field often fails us, and what people do to manage when there's no professional help available. This is for both ND people and professionals. My classes are a unique space where we get to interact as peers without hierarchy. Recordings are shared the next day. Sliding scale (50% off) and free scholarship spots are available.

💛 My year long-course, 50 Vagus Exercises in a Year, is still open for enrollment. We're exploring natural vagus nerve stimulation while honoring individual pacing and considering neurodivergent differences. The exercises are taught through short videos, with a monthly Q&A session on zoom, and several more ways to learn with me. We started last month and there’s currently 8 short videos and 2 Q+A recordings if you want to catch up with us.
