From emergency codes and pediatric care to IV starts, wound care and meaningful conversations with patients, Forrest Health’s Summer Nurse Extern Program gave 39 senior nursing students the opportunity to turn classroom knowledge into real-world experience.

Students from nursing programs across Mississippi spent the summer learning alongside experienced Forrest Health nurses in Emergency Care, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, Medical-Surgical nursing and other specialties across our health system.

For Maggie Pearce, the experience confirmed her passion for emergency nursing. For Reagan Baucum, it offered valuable pediatric experience. Amyiah Mark gained confidence through hands-on emergency care, while Kadie Craft and Aleigha Jarrell discovered how compassion, communication and teamwork shape every patient interaction.

Each student left with stronger clinical skills, greater confidence and a deeper understanding of the nurse they hope to become.

“I’ve learned what I’m made of,” Maggie said. “And I know this is where I want to be.”
