Team Thor

Team Thor I'm a 13-year-old warrior fighting against Sickle Cell disease, and I need your help. To address this, I started chelation treatment to remove the excess iron.

I urgently need a 10/10 stem cell donor match, and I'm reaching out to all the amazing individuals who can make a life-saving difference. I am Thor, an intelligent and vibrant 13-year-old with big dreams of becoming an Electrical Engineer. Aside from my academic pursuits, I enjoy fishing, shooting on the range, golfing, and spending time with my friends. Being an honor roll student, I take my schoolwork seriously, although my attendance and performance can sometimes be affected by my frequent absences from school. I was born with Sickle Cell Anemia, an inherited blood disease that causes significant damage to my body over time. At just 8 months old, I had my first blood transfusion, which was a surreal experience for me and my family. It was hard to believe that at such a young age, I was receiving someone else's lifesaving blood. When I turned 2 years old, I experienced my first pain crisis, and it was a challenging time for my parents. They felt so helpless seeing me in pain, rubbing my arms, and expressing my discomfort. I would often cry out, saying, "Ouch, pain, momma, it hurts; please stop the pain." It was heartbreaking for my parents to witness, and all they could do was offer me comfort and wait for the pain medication to take effect. In 2014, my life took another unexpected turn when I underwent a routine Transcranial Doppler Scan (TCD). The results came back abnormal, indicating that I was at high risk of having a stroke at the age of 4. To prevent this, my treatment plan included monthly blood transfusions and hydroxyurea medication. A port was surgically placed in my tiny chest to make the bi-weekly blood transfusions more manageable. It took some time for me to adjust to this device, which was crucial to my monthly transfusions. As time went on, I underwent over 20 blood transfusions, which unfortunately led to iron overload in my body. After discussing my abnormal TCD scan with my doctor, we explored the possibility of a Bone Marrow Transplant as a potential cure for Sickle Cell Disease. In 2015, my family and I partnered with NMPD (formerly known as Be The Match) to find a suitable donor. Over the years, we encountered three potential lifesaving donors. The excitement and hope were overwhelming when a potential match joined the NMDP registry in 2017. However, our joy was short-lived as the donor decided not to proceed with the donation. In 2022, two more potential donors appeared on the registry, but unfortunately, they couldn't be located. To increase our chances of finding a match, we also sought assistance from Marrow Mates, an organization that supports families in their search for donors. Through their Extended Family Donor Search Initiative, we have received some leads, which has been quite exciting. In November 2023, I was admitted to the hospital due to a chronic pain crisis that affected my entire body. The pain in my left hip was especially severe, making it difficult for me to walk. During my hospitalization, an MRI revealed that I have stage one AVN (Avascular Necrosis). The race is on to find a match for a potential transplant. If my mobility worsens in the coming months, I may need to undergo Core Decompression surgery. Despite all the challenges I have faced and will continue to face, my attitude remains positive. I always tell myself it wasn't my time when potential donors fell through or obstacles arose. I maintain a level of maturity beyond my years. My family and I are incredibly grateful for the support we have received on our journey. The cost of a stem cell transplant is significant, and to help with the expenses, we have set up a GoFundMe account. We appreciate any donation, regardless of the size, as every contribution makes a difference. Additionally, we encourage others to share our story and urge family members and friends between 18 and 40 to join the registry. If you want to join the registry, simply text "Showup4thor" to 61474. By showing up for me, you are showing up for everyone. Remember, it only takes one person to say yes and potentially save a life. My story is a testament to my strength, determination, and the power of community support. Despite my challenges, I will continue to pursue my dreams and inspire those around me. Thank you for being a part of my journey. Text: ShowUp4Thor To 61474

Happy 2nd Anniversary of Freedom from Sickle Cell, Thor! 🎉

Two years ago today, October 22, 2024, our lives changed forever. Thor's sister became his hero — donating her bone marrow and giving him the gift of a cure for sickle cell anemia. The process was grueling. There were moments on that journey when I felt myself start to fall apart. But Thor — my brave, strong boy — would look at me and say, "Mama, we asked for this." That's what carried us through:

-The Pain: of the bone marrow transplant
-The Strain: of the journey
-The Gain: of being sickle cell free

Any time I showed even a flicker of weakness, he reminded me why we chose this road. So we put it on the back of a shirt: Thank God for carrying us through this journey.

Today, Thor is leaner, stronger, and — most importantly — healthy. Congratulations, son. We are so proud of you and so full of gratitude. I cannot wait to do all the things outside with you that we couldn't do before — to simply live, freely and fully.

To anyone reading this: you could become someone's hero too. Join the registry at www.nmdp.org and help give another family the kind of miracle we received. Rodney Forte

Happy 16th birthday to my heart! 🎉💙

Watching you flourish into the handsome young man you are today has been the ride of a lifetime — nerve-racking, humbling, and beautiful all at once. It has been 1 year, 11 months, and 5 days since your bone marrow transplant, and you are no longer locked behind the Sickle Cell bars that once held you. Now I get to watch you play in the snow, jump into any body of water without a wet suit, and go on vacation without scanning for the nearest hospital. What a burden has been lifted off our shoulders — what a miracle we get to live in.

Before your transplant journey, we prayed together, and you looked at me and said, "Momma, it's ok, God has me wrapped in His arms." Baby, what an awesome God we serve.

We are beyond proud of you and everything you've overcome and accomplished. Keep reaching for the stars, keep being polite, keep being YOU, and always keep God first.

🎂 If you'd like to bless Thor with a birthday gift, his favorite spot is Cookout — $5 goes a long way! Cashapp: https://cash.app/$ThorForte

And in honor of Thor's journey, we keep encouraging others to join the NMDP registry and become someone's life-saving match. If you're between 18-40 and in good health, you could be the miracle for a patient searching right now. Join today at www.nmdp.org.

Happy Birthday, Thor — we love you beyond words. 💙🎈

Thor surprised Mrs. Jannette Nelson with a visit on Friday, and it was truly heartwarming. She hadn't seen Thor in years, and the look of shock on her face when she saw how much he has grown was priceless.

Our time there brought back so many cherished memories, especially as we visited the PDay nurses. Nurse Trisha Ricks, we missed you during our visit—hope you had a great vacation! We can’t wait to see you on our next trip. It’s moments like these that remind us of the bonds we share and the joy of reconnecting. 💖 Rodney Forte Barbara Forte Annie Forte

Friday we attended the Tate Holbrook Annual Sickle Cell Disease Update in Greenville, where we met new caregivers, warriors, and individuals who have been cured of Sickle Cell Disease through bone marrow transplant. It was also wonderful to reconnect with our colleagues.

In this video, the young woman sitting on the panel is incorrectly identified as Thor’s sister. She is not Thor’s sister. Although her name escapes me at the moment, she received a bone marrow transplant in 2009 and is now doing very well as a bright college student. We wish her continued health and the brightest future as she approaches graduation.

As many of you know, Thor underwent a bone marrow transplant on October 22, 2024. His sister, Sierra, was his donor, and the doctors were amazed by the amount of bone marrow they were able to extract from her hip. They had never seen that much bone marrow taken from an adult, so we affectionately dubbed it "liquid gold."

Since the transplant, it's been a year and nine months, but we faced some challenges beginning January 5. Thor indulged in a spicy chicken biscuit from Bojangles. While he had been enjoying spicy foods up to that point, this particular biscuit triggered a chain reaction. His mouth began to swell, became raw, and he developed painful ulcers. We visited doctors and dentists for months, trying everything from mouth rinses and ointments to salt gargles, but nothing seemed to help.

After about four months, Thor was diagnosed with chronic oral graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). This condition occurs when Sierra's transplant immune cells start to recognize Thor's body as foreign and attack his healthy tissues, particularly in his mouth. Chronic ulcers can develop months after a transplant, and once the diagnosis was confirmed, Thor was prescribed a medication called Jakafi (Ruxolitinib). This medication works to calm Sierra's immune cells and manage the inflammation.

We're unsure how long Thor will need to be on Jakafi, but we hope that his cells and Sierra's will cooperate so he won't have to rely on it for over a year. You may have noticed that Thor has lost some of the natural color in his lips; this is linked to the immune response from chronic GVHD, which targets the body's pigment-producing cells known as melanocytes. Despite these changes, he remains handsome.

But enough about that—today was the first day of school at Havelock High, and Thor was excited to return to the building, eager to be around friends and teachers. We can’t wait to see where this school year takes him; the sky's the limit! I managed to get through the day without crying.

After going through this transplant experience, I can say you could be someone's only hope; you could be someone's cure. I urge you to please join the NMDP registry online—it's free! You must be between the ages of 18 and 40 and in good general health. Sign up at www.nmdp.org

The Ghillie suit I wore on Saturday symbolizes how people with Sickle Cell mask the pain that they endure.

Concealment of Struggles:

Just as a Ghillie suit blends into its surroundings, many people with sickle cell disease often hide their pain and struggles behind a smile or a facade. This camouflage reflects the internal battles they face, which are not visible to others.
