3 reasons why I am on social media.

1. Evidence-based medicine belongs to everyone, not just people who can navigate a complex healthcare system.
2. Aging well is not inevitable. It is built. In my years of practicing geriatric medicine saw what a change in trajectory meant starting decades before.
3. I want to show medical students and young physicians what responsible social media looks like for a physician. We have a platform and a responsibility. It is possible to be evidence-based, honest about uncertainty, entertaining, and ethical — all at the same time. Medicine needs more of that online, not less.

I do not sell supplements. I do not have a course to push. I just follow the evidence wherever it goes and tell you what I find.

Now is the time we set your trajectory. 🧠

The Supplement Files — Ashwagandha. No supplements to sell. No agenda. Just the evidence — good, bad, and mixed.

The benefits are real. The stress and sleep data from randomized controlled trials is genuinely solid. But there is a safety story most people taking this have never heard.

The part most people don’t know:

The NIH LiverTox database has documented 23 reported cases of clinically apparent liver injury linked to ashwagandha. Usually presenting within weeks to months of starting it. Most cases resolved when stopped — but not all. The UK Food Standards Agency reviewed ashwagandha safety in 2024 and raised concerns. Denmark has banned it.

The liver injury appears to be idiosyncratic — rare and unpredictable. That makes it harder to know who is at risk.

There are also case reports of thyroid disruption. Potential interactions with thyroid medications, diabetes medications, and immunosuppressants. And it is contraindicated in pregnancy.

For most healthy adults the risk appears low. But this is not as benign as the marketing suggests.
