My Journey

My own journey into social work began as a middle school student in a counseling group for “at-risk” students. This experience, guided by an exceptional clinical social worker, shaped my life. He taught me to consider all facets of life when making decisions and inspired me to give back to my community. I earned my Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree at East Carolina University, becoming the first in my family to attend college. While completing my degree, I married a Marine, which led to a diverse career providing social work services across various communities. In 2022, I earned my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from North Carolina Central University, solidifying my path as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Special Focus in Therapy:

Emerging Adults: I have a special interest in middle school through college-aged students, especially given the impact of COVID-19 on their lives. Having witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced during school closures, as a Licensed School Social Worker, I aim to provide comprehensive support to help them regain control and empowerment in their lives. Let’s work together to cultivate “a life worth living.” I look forward to connecting with you and providing the support you need on your journey. Military-Connected Individuals, Dependants, and Veterans: I have a unique affinity for working with military service-connected individuals and their families. Being a Marine Veteran’s wife, I comprehend the challenges and rewards tied to military life. I’m a registered provider with Star Behavioral Health Providers, specializing in the field of military psychotherapy. LGBTQ+ Individuals, Allies, and Family Members: I am committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for the LGBTQ+ community. I am a proud Allie who has had to navigate religious trauma because of my own connection to the Southern Baptist faith. I understand the complexities of navigating religious trauma and can help individuals find their path, as well as support family members who may be working through their own understanding of how they can support their loved ones going through this process. Hillsborough Kiwanis continues to raise funds for Orange County’s children through their 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser in May.

I am so grateful to be a member of Kiwanis and for my business to be able to support such an important endeavor.

It has been a while, but Kiwanis held its annual and only fundraiser in May! We appreciate each and everyone of our sponsors! We are fortunate to have raised a significant amount of funds to "fund" what we give back to the Youth and youth related charities, including Terrific Kids!

To all the residents who came and enjoyed delicious pancakes with strawberries donated by McAdams Farm, and the other trimmings,we say thannk you.

More on our donations later. For now -- attached is our sponsor list! We appreciate you. Click on Ad to see total sponsors!

Today I had the privilege of speaking at the Women In Networking Hillsborough NC about my approach to psychotherapy and comprehensive clinical assessments.

“The name of my practice comes from my mother-in-love, Joy.
When she was diagnosed with gallbladder cancer, our family learned how quickly life can change.
After she passed, we adopted a family motto:
'Live Like Joy.'
Joy taught us to approach every day as though it was the best day ever.
Today, my mission is helping others discover their own version of joy—even during life's most difficult seasons."

We’re excited to welcome Callie McBroom, MSW, LCSW, CSW, LSSW., as our upcoming 10-minute morning speaker this Thursday, June 11th!

As the founder of Joyful Journey Counseling & Consulting, PLLC. located in Hillsborough, NC, Callie’s passion as a psychotherapist is to help individuals navigate life’s challenges with compassion, support, and practical tools for growth.

She’ll be sharing more about her practice, the work she does, and how mental health support can empower individuals and families in our community.

Pride Month provides an opportunity to reflect on a fundamental principle of ethical clinical practice. Every client deserves to be understood within the context of their lived experience.

For LGBTQIA+ individuals, experiences of discrimination, rejection, concealment, minority stress, identity-based harm, and social exclusion can significantly influence mental health, nervous system functioning, attachment patterns, and overall wellbeing.

These experiences are not separate from clinical work. They are part of the clinical picture. Trauma-informed care requires clinicians to understand not only what has happened to a person, but also the environments, systems, and cultural messages that continue to shape their experience. Affirming care is often discussed as though it is a specialty area or advanced competency.

In reality, it is a baseline expectation. Clients should not have to educate their therapist about the impact of identity-based stressors in order to receive competent care. Effective therapy requires curiosity, humility, cultural responsiveness, and a willingness to continually expand our understanding of experiences that may differ from our own.

Creating spaces where clients feel seen, respected, and understood is not separate from trauma-informed practice. It is part of it.

Join us for a FREE seminar on Tuesday, May 19th at 8:30 am at the Masonic Lodge, where we’ll dive into how clutter and disorder impact your energy, your stress levels, and your daily life...and, most importantly, what to do about it.

We’ll also explore how simple, effective home systems can actually stick (even on low-energy days), instead of falling apart when life gets busy.
And yes…there’s a bonus! One lucky attendee will win a FREE 2-hour professional organizing session ($170 value!)

If you’ve ever:
• Felt low-grade stress walking into certain rooms
• Struggled with a space that never stays organized
• Blamed yourself for “not being consistent enough”
• Felt mentally drained just thinking about organizing
• Had systems that only work when you have the energy to maintain them....

This is for you! Come learn a different way forward—one that feels lighter, more doable, and actually sustainable.

Most couples wait until they're already heated to figure out what to say.

By then, it's too late. These phrases work because they create safety before conflict escalates.

They signal to your partner that you're listening, that their feelings matter, and that you're solving this together.

You don't need to memorize them. Just notice how different they feel from how most people communicate during tension.

Like this if you're trying to fight less and follow for more on building a secure relationship.
