Officially formed in 2003, the north american squirrel association (nasa) is a non-profit organization that grew out of the desire to provide physically challenged and elderly members of our community accessible opportunities to access the outdoors. Formed originally as a hunting and fishing organization, we have now expanded to include a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities serving youth

, veterans with disabilities, people with disabilities and elders. Through the kind generosity of individuals and businesses in the region, nasa is able to provide all of our programs and services to our participants at no cost. If you or someone you know might benefit from nasa's programs and services, please contact us anytime. If you have a passion for the outdoors and would like to help someone less fortunate who isn't able to access the outdoors like an able-bodied person, we need your volunteerism. 🎣💚 Reeling in Smiles All Summer Long! 💚🎣
Our Trout Pond Fishing events at Camp Decorah may be over for the year, but the smiles are still making waves!
From first-time catches to seasoned anglers, our participants enjoyed the peaceful setting at the Boy Scouts' Camp Decorah trout pond while sharing laughs, swapping stories, and celebrating every fish that found its way to the net. Whether young at heart or living with a disability, everyone had the opportunity to experience the excitement of fishing in a welcoming, accessible environment.
The biggest catches weren't always measured in inches—they were measured in smiles, friendships, confidence, and memories that will last a lifetime.
A heartfelt thank you to our amazing volunteers who baited hooks, untangled lines, celebrated every catch, and made sure each participant had a successful day on the water. We also extend our gratitude to Camp Decorah for providing such a beautiful location for this special program.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this season. Until next season... keep your lines tight, your stories slightly exaggerated, and remember—the best catch of the day is often the memories you bring home. 💚🐿️🎣 We can't wait to see you back at the pond next year for more fish stories, more laughter, and more unforgettable memories!

🚤 Another Great Day on the Water! ☀️
Every pontoon ride has its own story, and this one was filled with beautiful scenery, good music, great conversations, and plenty of smiles.
Our volunteer captains, John and Susan, had the pleasure of taking another wonderful group of community members out to enjoy the beauty of the Mississippi backwaters. From spotting wildlife to simply relaxing with friends, it was a reminder that sometimes the best days are the simplest ones.
These outings are about so much more than a boat ride. They're about connecting with nature, enjoying time together, and creating memories that everyone deserves to experience.
Thank you to our incredible volunteers, supporters, and participants for making our Pontoon Program so special. We can't wait to welcome more guests aboard this season!

🚤 Making Memories, One Boat Ride at a Time 💚
There's something special about a day on the water.
Our volunteer captains John and Susan recently had the pleasure of taking three community members on a relaxing pontoon ride through the Mississippi backwaters, complete with a little fishing along the way. One of our guests was kind enough to share these photos, while the other two preferred to stay behind the camera—and we're always happy to respect their privacy.
The highlight of the day? Our featured angler decided to use a piece of candy as bait... and it worked! 🍬🎣 While the fish may have been on the small side, the smiles, laughter, and excitement were absolutely priceless.
At n.a.s.a., we know it's never just about catching fish or taking a boat ride. It's about spending time outdoors, making connections, sharing a few laughs, and creating memories that last long after the boat returns to the dock.
These are the moments that remind us why we volunteer—and why we're so passionate about making the outdoors accessible to everyone.

🚤☀️ Pontoon Season Has Officially Begun! ☀️🚤

The smiles, the wildlife, the fresh air, and the peaceful beauty of the Mississippi backwaters—there's nothing quite like a day on the water.

Last week, n.a.s.a. kicked off another season of pontoon rides, helping seniors and individuals with disabilities enjoy the outdoors from the comfort of our accessible pontoon boats. Our first passengers of the season were treated to beautiful scenery, wildlife sightings, and plenty of great conversation as we cruised through the backwaters.

These outings are about so much more than a boat ride. They provide an opportunity to reconnect with nature, spend time with friends and family, and create lasting memories on the water.

A huge thank you to our volunteer captains and crew members who make these rides possible. Your time and dedication help bring the outdoors to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience it.

Here's to another amazing season on the water! 💚

Moments like this are why we do what we do. 💚♿🌲
Recently, a Northern Hills 6th-grade student was able to fully participate in a class trip to Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center with the help of one of n.a.s.a.'s track chairs.

From exploring the grounds to spending time with classmates and enjoying the outdoor activities, he experienced the adventure right alongside his peers. The track chair helped make trails, outdoor spaces, and learning opportunities accessible so he could be part of every moment.

But the best moment of the day came at the very end.
As he was getting off the elevator to head home, his entire class erupted into cheers for him. 🎉

It's hard to put into words what that means. Not just inclusion, but belonging. Not just participation, but being celebrated by friends.
We are honored to have played a small role in making that day possible. Thank you to the teachers, staff, classmates, and everyone at Eagle Bluff who helped create such a memorable experience.
Because every child deserves the chance to learn, explore, and make memories outdoors with their friends.

We had the privilege of honoring a man who gave so much of himself to others.

Family, friends, and fellow n.a.s.a. volunteers gathered at Mosey’s Memorial Park to dedicate a plaque in memory of our longtime pontoon captain, **Jim Shugrue**.

For years, Jim shared his time, kindness, and love of the outdoors with countless seniors and individuals with disabilities aboard our pontoon program. Whether he was navigating the backwaters, sharing stories, spotting wildlife, or simply providing a welcoming smile, Jim helped create memories that will last a lifetime for so many of our participants.

While we deeply miss Jim's presence, his legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the countless outdoor experiences he helped make possible.

We were honored to have Jim's family with us as we unveiled the plaque, ensuring that future visitors to Mosey's Memorial Park will remember the man who dedicated so much of his life to helping others enjoy the outdoors.

Thank you, Jim, for your friendship, your service, and your unwavering commitment to our mission.

Making the Outdoors Possible.
This spring, Bentlee from West Salem was able to join his classmates on a camping trip and experience the adventure alongside his friends thanks to the use of a n.a.s.a. track chair.

The track chair helped provide access to the campground and outdoor activities, allowing Bentlee to fully participate in the trip, create memories, and enjoy the same experiences as his peers.
At n.a.s.a., this is exactly why we do what we do. Whether it's camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, or simply exploring the outdoors, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy nature without barriers.

A special thank you to the teachers, staff, and volunteers who helped make this experience possible. Seeing smiles, friendships, and confidence grow in the outdoors reminds us that accessibility truly changes lives.
